Unread Count is Wrong?!?
Please Login to Remove!
I changed the battery in my 9700 yesterday and when it restarted, it showed an unread count of 10. There were actually two unread SMS messages, but after that when I press 'u', it says "No unread message in list". And yet its still displaying 8 unread messages at the top of the screen?!?
I have a combined SMS & email mail folder. But the Icon for the SMS/MMS folder shows '(8)' after it. When I open it there is no unread messages. But when I then exit it, the icon no longer shows '(8)', but my Blackberry is still showing 8 unread messages at the top of the screen!! I have restarted several times, but it stays the same.
Any suggestions how I can fix this? I'm on 5.0.0.593 - I upgraded to it a week ago, but this problem only occurred yesterday.
Regards,
Donal

I think you have corrupted messaging folder.
Make a back up and then clear up messages in back up and restore > advance
send test sms to self and see if problem reoccur

Take a look at How do I reset my message counter to clear, or zero? - BlackBerryFAQ.

That's like taking an axe to trim a fingernail.
Use the link posted by Aiharkness first to troubleshoot the issue.

Thanks for all your tips. I've tried all the steps in that FAQ, apart from wiping the Blackberry. I've also tried to backup and restore the DB, but it fails.
So, I guess I need to try re-installing the OS?

Personally, I would say to check ALL the folders (Messages folder > Menu > View folders and check EACH and EVERY folder again for an unread message.
In EACH folder scroll to the top of the list and select > Menu > Mark Prior Open.
I've seen too many times that a user finally finds the unread message.

Thanks JSanders. I've just done that again. Still showing 8 unread messages! So, should I re-install the OS?

Yep, if you're certain you've done it all.
Do they appear as unread email messages? You could try to clear only that email database first. Connect to Desktop Manager > Backup/Restore > Advanced and on the right pane, scroll to your message database and select CLEAR below.

There was another thread where a guy turned off the encryption and his counter fixed itself. You might try that...

check your "View Saved Messages" files in your email
the reason why your blackberry shows 8 unread messages is that you must have at one time, have saved your email in your saved message file before opening it to view, so when you are in you main email it does not show any that are opened, you will have to go into your view saved messages file to view and open email to clear them all.
Hope this helped you

It's OK, I've found it in the Beta Thread.

Hi,
I've had the same problems with my unread count (no unread sms no unread emails marked all prior read. check via "go to next unread for all messaging for sms" no unread emails no unread bb messenger messages) and all the answers I have found on the internet did not work to reset the unread count except a security wipe of all data which was really tideous and time consuming for a minor feature.
This round however, I had a hunch encryption was a probable reason and disabled encryption on the phone, did a soft reset and counter was reset to zero. I'm now thinking twice about enabling encryption.
Hope this helps someone.
cheers.
jt.

Hi. I have the same problem with an unread message icon on the home screen when in fact there are no unread SMS. Encryption seemed to be the problem. If I disabled encryption and re-booted the device, the icon disappeared. But if I re-enabled encryption then on the next re-boot the unread sms icon would appear again.
So the work-around seem to be to disable encryption before I reboot each time. Its a pain -- esp if I dont remember to do it -- but at least it is a temporary fix until BB sorts out the bug.

I had the same thing with Vodafone's .656 release... no matter what I did, it kept doing the same thing. Only way round it was to upgrade to .862 which has solved the problem completely.
Hope this helps...
