Does anyone know if the applications/themes from the 8900 or 9000 will work on the 9700?

Depends on the app or theme
Themes are unlikely to work. They are designed for each device, due to the size requires for screen, and the OS.

Apps are sometimes just "above 4.2" etc, but with OS 5 on the 9700, some just wont work until they are updated by the developer.
