Default upgrading help needed

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I am a technician (still learning) and am new to modding blackberrys, I work on GSM phones and am OK with the regular phones in terms of modding.

No, you can upgrade with no problems. Just uninstall the .64 from your PC. Install the .67 and delete the vendor.xml file. Plug your Pearl in and the Desktop Manager will ask if you want to upgrade.

I use the same computer for upgrading so will have multiple instance of applications.

Where exactly will I find the vendor.xml, on my PC vendor.xml appears in several locations. which one is the correct one to remove ?t

I want to upgrade a 8100 pearl. it is currently .64

my specific questions

1 Are the blackberry 8100 DM compatible with any BB 8100, or must the DM be the same version as the OS ?

2 Are there any 'unbranded' 8100 OS that I can use ?. I would like to unbrand (if posssible ) the 8100, which DM would be used ?

3. if no unbranded OS is available, then I would want to upgrade to the .67. can the 4.2.0.12 DM with apploader 4.2.0.14 be used. I have that currently installed

3 Instructions to upgrade, possible instructions above would work, but any missing steps, because there may be some assumptions that are taken for granted that a newbie would not know. plus any other thing that I should know when upgrading

I am also a technician and suggest you do the following.

Download and install BlackBerry Device Manager v4.2 (English) from:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22

This will install the Application Loader as well as all needed drivers. The Application Loader is under:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe"

Now you have two choices. Either download and install all the firmware you need, or install the latest firmware you can find for each model you support, and rename the file vendor.xml "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader" after each model you install - so after you install Cingular's 8700c firmware, rename vendor.xml to vendor.Cingular.8700c.xml. Once you've installed all the models you need, copy the most recent vendor,provider.model.xml to vendor.xml - it should have the most current definitions for all vendors and models.

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files"
with names typically similar to the name of the original file. For example, the file "8700M_PBr4.1.0_rel529_PL2.0.0.152_A4.1.0.377_Cing ular.exe" installs to the subdirectory "8700-v4.1.0.377_P2.0.0.152".

The other option is to just install the latest version firmware you can find and have NO vendor.xml. Application Loader will be able to detect which model is attached and use the appropriate files. This is far simpler.

Now, this should all work fine, but upgrading options are listed on pages 13 and 14 of the Upgrade Guide.

Hope that helps.

I must be doing something wrong.

installed Cingular 8100 (8100M_PBr4[1].2.0_rel88_PL2.2.0.41_A4.2.0.71_Cingular.exe ) deleted the vendor.xml file. reinstalled the application. but it installed with ver 4.2.0.71 but it is still branded as T-Mobile ?

Anyway. I used the javaloader.exe -u wipe to 'kill' the device (507) code

I then reinstalled the cingular desktop manager and OS. it would not upgrade ?

I then had to delete the vendor.xml file for it to upgrade.

After which I am still seeing the BB as being T-Mobile branded (T-Mobile logo appers when the device powers on/off) .. does this mean that I am not truly having the Cingular firmware. the firmware is v4.2.0.71 (platform 2.2.0.41), but the phone is still T-Mobile branded.

Is there a way to get the phone the way as if it was originally a cingular issued 8100 ? , The phone still looks and seems the way before it was upgraded.

The T-Mobile silkscreen will always be there regardless of what OS you load. You can have the Cingular OS on there, you just won't get their silkscreen.

Default Silkscreen

does the silkscreen impact in any way on the functionality of the blackberry ?

the file version I am seeing in the download area is T-Mobile (United States) - 4.2.0.53/4.2.0.42. would this work on the upgraded .71 version (suspect not)

No the silkscreen doesn't impact any functionality.

Click on the link in my sig and go to Cingular (United States) - 4.2.0.88/4.2.0.71. That is the newest OS. Just remember to delete the Vendor.xml file after installing the OS on your computer.

I tried the Cingular version. I removed the blackberry.alx file and replaced it . but curiously both file size are the same. I 507 the phone and reinstall with the latest cingular .The tmobile silkscreen still remains even after the upgrade..... ahhhhhh ....

Oh, so the T-Mobile branding can not be removed. So you can't ever, ever remove it (sorry - it has been posted so many times before).

You can not remove the vendor branding that is on the BlackBerry.

You can apply any OS to any BlackBerry. They are all written by RIM. But once the carrier branding is put on it - which is completely seperate from the OS - then it stays branded forever.
