I put in a call to our Cingular rep asking him to put me on the invitation list.. hopefully he will and I get to be there for the launch of 83xx..

are the phones given out at a discounted rate at these launch parties ?

I think they should skip the party and just get it introduced and for sale! I got a 8800 in the "Black Box" from the New York party for sale now on eBay.

I just attented the Philadelphia launch party for the 8800.

I had a really good time. Won 2 free 8800's in drawings, met a great RIM rep which I get inside info from now, met with tons of vendors regarding all the latest apps for BB, and found out TONS of future info regarding devices.

For example you will not see 3G anytime soon. Well let me correct that you will not see it until RIM solves the battery drain problem with a 3G enabled device. See with UMTS, the device requires a second radio which sucks the battery life to no end. One of RIM's long time (and future) concerns has been battery life. They will not sacrifice this. Also with some interesting compression technology coming up in a SP soon you will see the data stream get squashed on the browser, allowing for much faster web viewing. RIM has been testing EDGE vs UMTS(3G) on the browser side and found no significant increase in viewing speed. The major advantage with 3G will be for downloads and tethering.

Just some info guys enjoy.

P.S. All the really hot young marketing women were not to bad to chat with either ;)

Without html email I suppose one of the biggest reasons for 3G is moot. If you're downloading text only then the standard cellular speeds should be fine. Of course there's always the web...

Think RIM understands that rendering websites more quickly demands a faster processor, not a faster network? Faster processors also place a higher demand on battery life. This is the cascade that has been known since mobile access to the internet was created.

I'm certain that one RIM contact who is under NDA is not sharing detailed internal info with a brand new acquaintance.

I agree with you on 3G, RIM is not about to adopt 3G and sacrifice the device dependability. Long battery life has long been a trade mark of RIM devices and until processors and batteries improve, I think RIM will leave 3G to the "other" devices.
