Pope: Condoms aggravate the HIV problem.
Please Login to Remove!
Speaking about HIV/AIDS, Pope Benedict XVI said "AIDS is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems."
I am still amazed every time the Catholic Church denounces birth control and in this situation HIV control.

spoken by a man who has never once stood between the legs of a woman. WTF does he know?
i know that is a bit crass but that is just my opinion of the high ranking catholic figures. why should i (or anyone for that matter) listen to a bunch of men whom have likely never had sex talk about it.

Because self-control is something that isn't a side effect of latex.
And neither is wisdom.

Sure, stopping people from having sex would do a LOT to slow down the spread of AIDS. But people aren't going to stop, so give the condoms and teach them to use them, each time, every time.
I think it was a really stupid thing for the pope to say.
Now where's my handbasket?

I agree with you test. And I don't agree with the Pope on this. With a little more tact than others have seen fit to use, the church is wrong on this issue, IMHO.

i actually agree to some extent. money alone will not solve something which is, as was said above, an issue of self-control. Yes, preventive measures are necessary and should be promoted to no end. But do they really serve their purpose or are they merely a stopgap to temper the larger problem?
How many people, do you think, have MORE protected sex, using the condom as their security blanket? Does the mere use of a condom encourage them to be more cavalier in their ways? If so, then condoms probably aren't addressing the problem, especially for the instances where it doesn't work as intended, which either leads to an unplanned pregnancy or the spread of a disease.
The goal should be to simply prevent unplanned pregnancy and the spread of disease, not to provide means for acting MORE ambitiously while simply maintaining the level of risk.

Condoms address the issue, the issue of disease and pregnancy prevention. The Pope's issue is one that has failed for centuries, sex when married and only with one's spouse. Thats a fairy-tale that exists only in rare situations. Even amongst the Catholic Clergy there are people having sex. Rather than trying to make everyone fit into their fairy-tale world the church should be more concerned with disease and pregnancy prevention.
Its like teaching Abstinence, ignoring the reality of the world does not move you closer to the fairy-tale - it just makes things worse. - my opinion.

I doubt it changes things in any statistically significant way. Latex doesn't confer wisdom any more than it confers self-control.

Now I don't know if I'd go that far. There are a few of us who still enjoy a mongomous marriage.

+2.
And no, DH and I were not virgins... we are remarried. Each of us had a somewhat unfortunate starter marriage in our early 20s.

right, the fairy-tale (the one i meant) is more of the abstinence when unmarried rather than monogamy.

The Pope is a religious fanatic in my opinion... I was raised very strict Roman Catholic and have since used common sense in place of my upbringing... The problem here is that the Pope is living in the 10th century....
Wake up! People these days have sex without knowing the name of the person they are boom-booming with.... Toss in a few drinks and they have sex in alleys by trash cans... They don't use condoms, think about birth control ect....
The Pope should have bigger fish to fry like the millions the church has paid out to victims of priest rape....
