Actually let me clarify my actual position. I am one that believes 100% you do not give in to terrorists. That includes attempting to save hostages lives. You sink a few ships without questions, hostages and all you will see a major drop in pirates. When your only result is death you may rethink your actions.

i really dont get this, theirs 5 people and 1 hostage on a boat, just drill a hole in the boat, and sink it, guns dont shoot in water. ffs this is really getting way too much tv air time, 3-4 battle ships sent out. ffs its in open water. sink the little boat.

Wirelessly posted (overwhelmingly stressed)

No battleships, 2 destroyers and an amphibious assault ship

Better yet, don't sink any ships, or do anything which would kill the hostages. Rather, announce that starting right now, they have 72 hours to release all ships and hostages, and if they don't - or the next time they attempt to take another ship hostage, we'll send in guided missile cruisers and bomb them, their palatial mansions and luxury cars, and their families - back into the stone age.

Another idea - I've read that the ships that have responded represent crews of thousands of soldiers. Fly one SEAL team, or one Ranger team by helicopter onto each ship that's transiting the area. Fly them off when the ship's out of the large area in which they operate, and fly them to the next ship. I bet that wouldn't take over a couple thousand troops, and there's a large number of countries who would likely be willing to participate and provide troops. Once they sink a couple dozen of the pirates attack skiffs and kill all on board, maybe they'll start having second thoughts.

thats what I dont understand, why do we send so much force when one seal team could solve the problem over night and no one would ever know the difference. The hostage would wake up the next morning and everyone would be gone. Problem solved. And didnt cost as much money. I dont see how these highly paid highly trained people cant understand this.

I agree surely during the pitch black of night a team could get over there quietly and solve this...

Probably from this point on we will start seeing ex-military/merc's on these boats for protection, similar to having US Marshall's on planes.. and it's something that is definitly needed at this point.

(BTW; Jsconyers, I got a good laugh at that lol)

Guys have you seen the life boat they are in? It is completely enclosed with 2 access hateches on the sides and one at the bow. Much harder for a team to access successfully

The show of force is to deter other pirates from trying to rescue the pirates on the life boat. The amphib vessel that will be there if not already has approx. 2500 Marines on board. Pirates are in deep crud

NICE!

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa...tes/index.html

The American captain of a cargo ship jumped to freedom today after being held by pirates on a lifeboat off the coast of Somalia, according to a senior U.S. official. U.S. Navy SEALs shot and killed three of his four captors, the official said. Capt. Richard Phillips is uninjured and in good condition, the official said.

LOL!

At the time of the shootings, the fourth pirate was aboard the USS Bainbridge negotiating with officials, the source said. That pirate was taken into custody.

I wonder what the Naval officers said to this bozo when they got radio that the rest of them were shot and killed by SEALS?

Isn't there another ship being held or did I read an older article?
