It tested it. It took around 30 seconds for the device to get a GPS signal. The mobile network module was turned off.

That is excellent news. Best of both worlds. Native GPS and Assisted GPS in the same unit.

30 seconds is completely normal (and actually relatively fast) for native un-assisted GPS. So we're not trading anything off by not having cellphone reception -- 3G reception would serve to simply accelerates the GPS fix speed, and possibly make locking a little bit easier in urban canyons and deep forests (since it's harder to get an initial fix than to maintain it.) Good news indeed.

It also keeps GPS usable when navigating through pre-cached maps in no-reception country areas (i.e. scrolling through the entire route beforehand, to download all the map data in advance of a trip)

BlackBerry Bold takes on iPhone | Australian IT

"There's a 2.0 megapixel camera with flash and video capability (the iPhone has a rudimentary 2mp camera without flash or video), a separate camera for video calling (the iPhone can't do video calls)"

I have not heard anything about video calling with the Bold. Where is this 2nd camera they speak of?

Does Google Maps work with the GPS, etc.? Just wondering if there were any drastic changes from the 88xx or 83xx.

It works. May need to get a newer version of Google Maps, but GPS works in Google Maps. There is a higher resolution screen on the Bold, so the maps are more detailed per screenful.

nothing really haha. I have both phones. The bold is a looker and doesn't feel as cheap as my 8320 which I still have. Keyboard feels a lot nicer on the bold compared with curve.

Can you specify why the keyboard feels a lot nicer than the Curve? Just curious, 'cause I have a 8800, and the only complaint I have is the keyboard (I have adapted). IMO, the Curve keyboard is better than the 8800. To hear you say the Bold's keyboard is better than the Curve's only frustrates me more that I can't get my hands on one !!!

The keyboard is just like the 8800 but a few improvements? Its sorta harder to press on a key so you'll know once you do press on one. I played with my friends 8800 and notice that when i typed my fingers would slip and press the next button. Not really the case with the Bold. But i agree the curves keyboard is alot better than the 8800 but looks like crap. I have the 8320 so most of my keys are white and when the leds are on it looks so dirty. Some keys look cleaner than others and I absolutely hate it. A keyboard i dont mind is actually the iphones. I typed so fast with it even without looking it took me like a couple of months to get use to it though aha.

Default Is the curve a better buy just for the keyboard

Currently I have a Pearl and love the small size. But the browser sucks for anything other than text news. After nearly 2 years ots time for a change.

But should i go for the Curve or the Bold? I love the size and design of the Curve and the usability of the keyboard is important.

Of course I would also like the bells and whistles of this new device as well.

Any advice?

Same here. I love the Pearl for it's small, form factor size. I do a lot of web browsing and it works ok fo rme. The Bold is peaking my interest, but not sure I can get used to carrying a brick around.
