I'm assuming that you are using a pre-existing SIM card. Were you using that in another BlackBerry device before? Might be an issue with the PIN not being released from the first device.

Verify if your device is indeed unlocked:

Do you have a BlackBerry data plan?

Might be helpful if you contacted the person you bought it from on craigslist and explained your problem, just to verify that the device really never has been used previously.

So what happens when you put the SIM into the device -- does it work (making calls, send text, etc.)?

1. Make sure the phone is unlocked. You can find plenty of websites online for that.
2. Make sure the PIN and IMEI is released if the phone was used by previous owner
3. Make sure you are on BIS/BES plan.

Sometimes your cell provider might be able to tell you if the PIN is/was registered with another device.

At that point I don't know. I can only suggest to contact the seller or get help with your carrier's customer service.

Default From the device

Try setting up the e-mail from the device itself, under settings, then "set-up email".
