is there a way to select more than one address book (group) filter at once? they're check boxes... but i can't seem to figure out how to check more than one at a time.

You can, however, have each contact a member of multiple categories.

I have my usual categories, like Business, Friends, Relatives, etc., but I also have one called -Quick Personal, which might contain some business contacts, friends and a relative or two. In contrast, if you happened to have a relative that worked with you, you could have that contact belong to both categories.

Not quite what you seemed to ask for but could serve the same function, depending on what you are trying to do.
