The other route is server copy address books, set up the replication in notes client, add the pim sync settings for that user, and your all set.

Ah if only I could get buy-in from the Notes folks. They only setup server based address books for executives.
Here's what RIM had to say:
There is no set limit for the number of contacts that are allowed on the BlackBerry. Obviously, the more changes to be made, the longer the updates will take. There is no real tricks to make the synchronize work, we do have suggestions on ensuring the data is transferred though.
Check for Special characters e.g., hyphen, space, period, apostrophe, slash in the email address.
You can check the local copy of the mail file as well as the server copy. To check the Server copy from the Lotus Notes client, hold the Ctrl - Shift keys and double click to open the mail file. You will notice more options under the views. The address book is listed under $Contacts. You should also check here for blank entries which are usually found at the bottom of the list.
Check the field mappings using BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
1. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager - Intellisync and click Configure PIM.
2. Highlight the Address Book and select Configure - Advanced Settings.
3. On the first tab (Confirmation) click on the Field Mappings button. Click OK to the pop up message
4. Verify the mappings are set correctly and OK out of the screens when finished.
Disable the wireless synchronization on the BlackBerry address book and use BlackBerry Desktop Manager to clear the address book database.
1. On the BlackBerry, open the address book - Options and set the Wireless synchronization to No and save the change.
2. On BlackBerry Desktop Manager, open the Backup and Restore icon, click Advanced.
3. On the right side of the screen, select Address Book and click on the arrow pointing to the left.
4. On the right side of the screen, select Address Book and click on the Clear button.
5. On the BlackBerry, open the address book - Options and set the Wireless synchronization to Yes and save the change.
6. You should see the address book entries arrive on the BlackBerry.
7. Close out of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager Backup and Restore settings, save if needed.
