Default Is GPS supposed to always work when outside?

Please Login to Remove!

Lately, my Storm has been unable to access GPS information. It just says it can't find itself. It's set to ON, etc. This happens when I am outside (and inside).

In Blackberry Maps, it just says "Searching for Satellites."

This started a couple days ago.

Note... if I reboot the Storm, it will sometimes start working again. Weird.

Is this just normal for GPS?

Thanks!

Wirelessly posted (overwhelmingly stressed)

Go into gps on your device and select refresh see if that helps

Wirelessly posted (8820)

To answer your question, instructions always say the unit must have a clear view of the sky. In the past, with a standalone gps device, and with a bluetooth puck, I've had trouble in very foggy or very cloudy weather. But I've found the gps in my 8820 to be very sensitive and haven't had those troubles like I remember before. It even finds satellites when indoors so long as it is reasonably near windows.

Also, be aware that if you have not used the gps in a while, or if you turn it on after moving a great distance from where it was last used, it will take a long time to find satellites, sometimes.

When you rebooted, was it a soft reset, or did you pull the battery for about 30 seconds? If not, do that.

And finally, ditto what EZ says.

Paul,

GPS services can be intermittent even with specialized gear. A clear shot is optimum and barriers, such as a roof, trees, bad weather systems, etc can interfere. That we now can access GPS services with a cellular phone is simply amazing. As a former military communicator in the 1980's I remember the joys of accessing satellite services from the field with much larger hardware. The notion of accessing services with a cellular phone back then would been laughable.

I agree a battery pull should put you back in business but I am thinking the technology will get better with time.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate all of the info. Educational.

I'm not sure I know the difference between a soft reset and pulling the battery. I have a program that offers the option to "Reset" the system. I causes a dialogue box that asks if I want to "Reboot now"... then goes through the long boot up procedure with the progress bar.

Thanks again!!

With qwerty devices, alt-caps-delete will reboot the device. Sometimes a reboot will set things right, but removing the battery is the certain to fix most things most of the time.

My understanding of the reset applications is that they trigger the process the blackberry goes through during an application install, when you get the message telling you the blackberry must restart in order to complete the installation. Hopefully someone will correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Bottom line, the hard reset -- removing the battery -- is the first troubleshooting step after reading the manual.
