Default Windows Vista Problem

Please Login to Remove!

I tried to install my Pearl onto Windows Vista Home Premium, however, when I plug it to the computer, it is detected by the computer and it shows an error. It says that my Blackberry was installed correctly, but my "RIM Composite Device" was not installed correctly because it does not have a driver. I have installed the latest Desktop Manager, which T-Mobile says works with Windows Vista. Desktop Manager does not detect the Pearl. I hope someone knows about this issue. Thanks very much in advance.

You need to download Desktop Manager Software v4.2 SP1 from blackberry.com website. I am using vista ultimate with no problems

I figured out what to do. You need to reformat your system. Blackberry leaves a little part of itself on your system. Reformat it, then go to windows update and let windows make itself completely up to date. Then install the newest desktop manager. It will work, it did for me. I'm sorry, but that was the only way it worked for me. I even edited the registry, but it still did not work until i reformatted it. Good Luck.

I have the exact same issue, but on XP.

Do you mean i have to format my disk?!!?
(i did not understand "reformat the system")

Is there any other option? We all know what it means to format... it's like selling your soul...

Odd. Tried installing the 4.2SP1 and it wigged out on me and I'm running Vista Enterprise. Popped in the supplied disc and it installed 4.2 (non SP1) just fine. Will try to upgrade to SP1 at another time but right now, everything works and "if it isn't broken, don't fix it".

Vista is nuts! I've tweaked it out and am finally starting to like it. I haven't tried to run anything blackberry on it though as it's run inside a virtual drive. Good luck! As far as formatting the drive.....there has to be a simpler way than reformatting. Google is your friend.

Didn't need to tweak Vista at all. Haven't even disabled UAC since it doesn't bother me too much after installing all the apps I need. The Blackberry software was the first app that actually gave me a problem during install and configuration.

i got vista ultimate and works fine

1) download the Desktop Manager Software v4.2 SP1 from RIM
2) extract the .exe using winzip or winrar to a directory
3) go the directory where you extracted the files to, and run setup.exe
4) follow the step by step instructions on the setup
5) enjoy using your BB ...

Lightbulb vista pearl install usb driver problem

I had the same trouble with Vista Home Prem (laptop) not finding the driver for "RIM Composite Device Driver". Actually, what I found was that the "RIM Composite Device Driver" was the first of 4 or 5 that won't be found unless you make it search the hard drive manually.

When you get the balloon showing the status of the new device installation (after plugging in your Pearl using the USB cable) click on the option to search the hard drive manually. I can't remember the exact items to click, you will have to find your own way there. (it shouldn't be hard)

Once there, make sure it is searching the Hard Drive root and also make sure to select the checkbox "search sub directories" (it may be worded a little differently). It will then find the driver located in C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\RimUsb.sys

Once found, the install "wizard" will continue to find new devices, about 5 or 6 in all (all for the Pearl) just keep doing the same thing and it will find the driver for each one. After it completes the last one it will say the device is ready to use.

At this point, I went into Device Manager in the Control Panel, expanded Universal Serial Bus Controllers and right clicked "Blackberry Devices" and selected Properties. From there I selected the Driver tab at the top to see the driver that the installation "wizard" found. This is how I knew the driver path noted above.

This is what my experience was like. Next, let's see if I can sync it with Outlook. And another project for another day is to figure out why my bluetooth adapter will not work with the Pearl on my XP desktop, then I'll try it on my Vista laptop.

Hope this info is helpful. I am curious if others find this solution works for them. If so, then there is a bug in the install wizard. I think it should be searching the hard drive by default. I assumed it was until I got to fiddling with it.

You need to go to desktop manager and find data connection and click detect and the pc will recognize your pearl.

The problem is in step 4 some computers are not detecting the correct drivers for "RIM Composite Device" even though 4.21 is installed.

If anyone is still having issues with getting rid of the "RIM Composite Device" message I just posted my solution, look here:
