Does anyone know what a send email 'tick' with a D above the 'tick' means?

Correct. And the check mark with the "R" means Received.

Tick - It has been sent.
Tick with the D - It has been delivered.
Ticket with the R - In BlackBerry Messenger it mean the message has been read.

what's the little smiley face with the clock next to it? and a big X over the smiley? i know it means unavailable, but would it show that if a phone was off or uncharged?

The red i mean the email is marked high priority. In other words, urgent mail.
