Done. No problems, nothing different that I can tell so far. Hopefully the memory will be better

Not to burst your bubble, but that feature has been there since the .18 beta build

I believe I have now moved to the next level of BBness and am no longer a newbie! I installed the new OS, everything went well and then I misread the About screen and thought the OS update didn't go through. I reinstalled the 0.81 OS to my computer, re-updated my BB OS and in the process ended up back at 4.2. Well, I just re-updated again and with mild panic noted that I had gotten the dreaded white screen of death with an error message 200. But just mild panic, not total panic set in because I have read the forums so many times I knew what to search for and found the answer right away. I followed the instructions for reloading the OS on a nuked BB and voila!, success. I am waiting for the hour glass to stop turning, probably in another 10 minutes and I should be back up just fine. It felt good to see the message that the loading operation was successful and the software has been updated successfully. Thanks, BBforums!

Edited to add:

Yes, a total success! I am now back up and running on .81.

Default Will .81 safe to upgrade?

Folks.. I have been using .69 for quite sometime and I think I am liking it. The only thing which is visible to me is that the memory leak is less as compared .52.

Can someone help me understand whether or not I will be benefited by upgrading to .81 version? I am not of the kind that I always need the latest but would prefer to weigh the pros n cons before I try it.

Any suggestion or help will be much appreciated?

The general consensus is that the big benefit is more memory. I had 32MB after a reboot.
To me, it also seems "snappier". When I loaded .69, I gave it a day and it picked up speed. This one seems to be quicker out of the gate.
Me likey!!

My UMA has kept connected all day long with this release... The last 4.5 OS I was on it would drop after 5 minutes.

32MB... wow !!! How much memory free you had with .69?? 32MB seems too much for me.

For me almost similar amount of memory remains free just after a reboot but slowly after regular usage it drops to around 17 or 18MB.

How come I only have 19MB of memory? I mean, it went up from 16MB with this last upgrade...but how does somebody have 32MB?!?!?! Should I delete programs that I don't use? Will that help?

.69 is very very stable and 99% of users would not notice a difference upgrading to .81 from .69. By going to .81, at least you know you have the most stable and word is that this is the last GSM build of 4.5.

This is going to sound really dumb but I don't want to fry my precious BlackBerry. If something went wrong with this upgrade, would it be just the OS damaged or the actual device? If something happened, can I go back to my faulty prehistoric 4.2?
Thank you guys in advance.

Don't worry and just do it.

I've done 4 OS upgrades now and last night failed mid upgrade leaving me with a white screen and 507 on it.

Part of the process is to make a backup of the device before wiping and upgrading.

Then if it works all is good and there is no need to worry but if it fails then you can use this link
BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ

and probably this one is the one to choose
How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder? - BlackBerryFAQ

or this one

What to do next if Jl Cmder will not connect and wipe - BlackBerryFAQ

I followed this process and am now back in possession of my phone with all its data because i was able to restore the backup.

the only problem is that all of your 3rd party apps will need to be restored but hey thats just part of the gadgetified wonderousness of this thing.

Anyone have a bad UMA calling experience on .81 yet?

On .69 I had a 90 minute call and a 35 hour call today without a hitch. So tempted to upgrade, but things seem dialed in on .69.
