Default Blocking non-flat rate data

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Blackberry 9780 running 6.0 Bundle 1879. I am on Tmobile (US) and subscribe (when I'm traveling outside of the US) to Tmobile's flat rate Blackberry International email plan. My phone is not associated with a BES.

So far, when roaming, the only way I've found to guarantee that I don't accidentally run up roaming charges is to essentially uninstall, or at least disable, all applications on my phone other than email that might use network resources. As you might imagine, this is a PITA.

Is there a way to essentially set up a firewall so that all communication that is not included in Tmobile's flat rate plan is blocked? A 3rd party application, even one at a reasonable cost would be worth the investment for me.

You can turn data off in network options. Also, you may have a setting to disable data when roaming. Look in the same place in options.

Note that I want to continue to get Blackberry email, it's the non-email services that I want to block. Are you suggesting that turning off data will still allow Blackberry email to function?

No. If data is off, it's off.

I re-read your OP and see now that you are buying the international plan. Check and see if your apn is configured in TCP options. I've seen it advised for your situation to delete the apn info and disable TCP/IP to force all data to use the BlackBerry apn. That's what I would do if I were you. But it isn't 100% from what I understand.

For info, see the post by dc/dc on this wrt using a BlackBerry in Afganistan, and why he eventually dropped T-Mobile because he kept getting hit with extra data charges.

Currently under TCP IP APN Settings are Enabled and APN is set to epc.tmobile.com

At least here in the US, when I disable/delete the APN I can't detect any difference in how anything operates (for example, I still have a BIS IP address that routes through Ontario, Canada). I'll still give it a shot the next time I travel.

Some third-party apps require the carrier apn. Opera Mini comes to mind, but I don't know if that's still the case. Also, some apps allow you to select the connection type, so you would be able to set the app to use TCP if other connection modes are a problem. At any rate, it sounds like nothing you are using requires it.
