Max message prepopulation count is 750. You can also set Message Duration in an IT Policy to -1. This will keep messages on the device forever. Besides, the memory on a device is usually limited. Tell Capt. Stubborn he doesn't want his "precious" to explode and send little bits of data everywhere. It's quite messy. Most non-technicial types are too stupid to really understand the true nature of sarcasm anyways.
PS: The correct terminology is: "...last 5 years of e-mails on
THEIR device..." and "I think 30 days is more then sufficient, but
THEY'RE the customer..."
