Default Is the Torch GPS worthless?

Please Login to Remove!

Is the Torch's GPS system junk or do I have a faulty unit?

Using both the map program that came with my Torch and also using Google Maps ... it shows me several thousand yards from where I really am.

My previous Blackberry was the World Edition and it was terrific and showed me within a foot or two ... and was every bit as good as the "real" Garmin-type GPS units.

But Torch's GPS seems to be worthless, which is crazy in a Blackberry thats so expensive. Anyone having similar experiences or is it just me?

Try downloading Blackberry Maps and see if it's more accurate. If it is then your ok and the other map software is using Cell tower triangulation which is never very accurate. Do you see a large circle or a dot on the maps. If so your in Cell method.

I use TeleNav on it and it's pretty good. I've used it on every BB I've had for the past 3+ years.

I had problem with mine too until I updated the OS. I'm currently running 6.0.0.246 and it is perfect now.

It's just you.

Go to Options > Device and to the GPS settings and press the Menu key to refresh the GPS. Be outside in a clear view of the sky. It could take a few minutes.

i find that it often takes more time to lock on my location than my 9700 ever did, and i've even had to put it up on the dashboard a few times to get a good reading on the satellites. not sure why, but the gps receiver in the 9800 seems less capable than the 9700.

The several thousand yard error is because upon start up, Google uses cell tower triangulation and data to try to determine your position while the GPS is finding itself. Keep in mind, for GPS to work properly, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. The initial fix could take 20 minutes or more.

i used the "refresh locations" setting technique ... which helped ... but the gps in the torch (it seems to me) is not nearly as accurate or as quick to get reception as the gps i had in my world edition.
so as i say, it's better now, but still disappointing.

What version of the OS are you running? I have no issues at all (Google Maps works very well) and I'm running 6.0.0.246 - someone else mentioned the same thing. If you are on an older version try upgrading.

Good luck.

I would still try Blackberry maps to see if it runs better.

samos, from your first post, it sounded like you were seeing location based on cell tower and not gps. How much did it improve after you following JSanders suggestion? And are you sure you are seeing gps location and not cell tower.

I've noticed sometimes with blackberry maps that the street address is way off the actual physical location, but the physical location is always accurate. That's not what you are talking about though, is it?

When the app is showing approximate location based on the cell tower you will see an uncertainty radius around the location. It's pretty obvious.

My Torch had the same problem (at first). But I soon discovered that after forcing the GPS to map my location a few times, it's now dead on accurate for both Blackberry Maps and Google Maps.

I'm happy.

running .337 here, can confirm as with other posters that you need to refresh the GPS 2 -3 times and no problems.
