This article has odds on a couple of items surrounding RIM/Blackberry, including stock price, market share and countries banning it. Thoughts?

With Google being sued for patent issues around android i doubt Rim has much to worry about. I also donxxx8217;t think losing a few sales in a country that seems to have the need to control it's population down to the type of cloths people have to wear is of much concern either.
Possibly the writer needed to have a story and decided RIM was a good one. The security issues seem to be around the need to see what people are doing and be able to decode the data. With the encryption methods being used end to end it just looks like some governments do not trust their citizens or want to see if the citizens are getting too informed. The other statement that RIM will allow data view for political reasons does not make much sense. Why would a company built on a platform of security suddenly and foolishly expose itself and potential business loss for some sleazy politician. Of course this is only my opinion and may be off base.

Don't worry, all the fuss about BlackBerry being blocked is just that - fuss. All the countries making this political charade just want a piece of the pie - a server installed on their territory so that they can continue to eavesdrop on their citizens, as is apparently the norm in those countries.

There will be no bans of BlackBerries, and that's pretty much guaranteed. The governments in those countries know that the moment they ban BlackBerris, the business community will serve them a massive dose of backlash, last but not least from all the telcos making HUGE money from selling BlackBerry devices and plans.

So don't worry, grab a beer, sit back and enjoy the show.

But what's sad is that RIM capitulated to Saudia Arabia's demand to be able to snoop on its citizens, thus giving dictatorial governments a foothold. What happened to RIM's commitment to security? Is the almighty dollar really the only thing they care for?

For users on a BES, the security is still there. The data stream is encrypted on the BB and decrypted on the BES. That's where RIM says they can't decrypt. The key is on the customer's BES. BIS is always decrypted on by the BIS server. So RIM's 'solution' will really only affect BIS users.
