Default Switching Devices, quick how to?

Please Login to Remove!

Ok here's what I need to do. I've been left in charge of the BES while my boss is away and we had worker leave last week and another worker wants the "old" blackberry.

So I'm running BES 4.1 and we're moving from an 8800 to an 8310

I don't know much but I'm assuming I'll have to delete the user account of the person who had the 8310 as that PIN number now needs to belong to the new user.

But other than that I really don't know what to do.

I've read that you can just do the device switch wizard, it will Backup the old device, copy info to the new device, and then aparently notify the BES that the 8310 has replaced the 8800?

I have access to the BES just through remote desktop at the moment.

I'm firmiliar with everything but BES so any help in what I need to do for the switch would be appreciated.

I'm making a losse attempt now but I'm really just winging it and other than deleting the user through the BES, I haven't touched anything else.

Thanks in advance!

NO! Do not do this. You'll erase the user's wireless backup and device settings.

Again, don't delete the user. I hope you haven't already.
Activating a new device for an existing user is VERY simple.
Just right-click their user account in BlackBerry manager and choose 'Generate and Email Activation Password'.
This will email a new activation password to the user and they just need to do an 'Enterprise Activation' on the new device.
(You could also do 'Set Activation Password' and then verbally communicate the password to the user.)

I have attempted the Enterprise Activation from the new phone.

It seems to sit there waiting forever... Not sure what to think about that.

The 8800 we're transferring from has not been touched in any way so if it does not work I can just pop the SIM back into it and forget about it for now.

I did delete the User that this phone belonged to before [GAH I knew I probably shouldn't have] Would that be the cause of this?

The BES has the Users PIN and Device info from their 8800, so by running Enterprise Activation on the 8310 it should just activate and update that information?

Or did I just bung everything up by deleting the User who used to have the 8310?

I've used a BB for years, but never dealt with any of this stuff, so it's all new to me!

Hmmm do I have to make sure I set up their e-mail on the new device first?

That's all I can think of that might be causing an issue? (Other than the whole deleting of the old User of the 8310)

you activate the new device.

Did old user leave the company? If not do not delete him unless he will not be getting another device and try activating him first.

That right.

8310 User has left us (User 1)

8800 User wants the 8310 (User 2)

I did delete User 1 from the BES as they will not be coming back.

I so far had no luck getting User 2 set up with the 8310. I did a device tranfer wizard to move files and settings, I switched SIM cards for the phone number, I edited SIM information in the 8310 to match the phone number.

The 8310 was wiped by User 1, so when it came to me it had already been cleared to defaults.

The only thing I have not done on the 8310 is set up the e-mail. I made the assumption that on a BES you just do the Enterprise Activation on the phone and it figures all of that out for you.

Cooper... you're making this WAY more difficult than it needs to be.
If you want help, then stop editing things... and making changes to the handhelds and BES... and just listen.

All you need to do is this:
1. Take the SIM card out of the 8800 and put it in the 8310.
2. Power up the 8310 and make sure it has a GPRS or EDGE signal (in capital letters)
3. Open BlackBerry Manager, right-click User 2, and choose 'Generate and Email Activation Password'. This will send an email to User 2 which they will open in Outlook or Lotus Notes. The email will contain an activation password.
4. On the 8310, go to Enterprise Activation screen and type in User 2's email address and activation password from step 3 above.... click menu button on device... choose 'Activate'

If those steps above don't work... then please let us know which step fails, and what happens.

Here's one for you. Everybody here uses a Mac. So User 2 has Entourage, is that good enough?

I'm the only onw running a Windows system (mainly to do things like OS updates and other things with the Blackberries here)

I will go through these steps tho

Thanks

Alternatively just issue an EA password manually, tell user 2 what it is and use it when filling in the EA details. I tend to use single chracater passwords for this and use the LHS of a suretype key just to remove any user issue.

It doesn't matter. As long as they get the email with the password, then that's enough.

You can also manually set the password and verbally communicate it to the user, as has been mentioned a few times already.

So I went onto the BES and did the following steps.

Right Click the user, select Set Activation Password
I chose a single letter and set it to expire within 1 hour.

Then I went onto the 8310 an Enterprise Activation.

I typed in the e-mail address of the user, the password and then brought up the menu and hit Activate.

It says "Activating [email address]" as it should, but then nothing happens.

EDGE is showing up for the network (all in caps as it should).

I'm thinking that we've maybe got some issues with the BES or something?

There's an "Assign Device" function through the manager but it would require me being at the machine with the new blackberry plugged in I guess.

Does the activation email eith ETP.DAT attachment reach the user's email inbox (in Entourage)?
If not, then check your SPAM filters to see if the message is being intercepted.

Go through this KB article as well:
KB13458 - The BlackBerry smartphone shows Activating or Retrying status during EA - Port3101.org : Your BES Connection

Again... you're making this more difficult. Stop poking around when you don't really know what you're doing.

This is what comes up in Entourage when the e-mail option is used (EPD.dat is attached as well)

This message is used to carry data between the BlackBerry handheld and an
associated server. Please do not delete, move or respond to this message -
it will be processed by the server.

I'm just poking around but not making changes. I know it should really be simple but I'm doing the exact steps that are supposed to be taken and it's not working.

And the phone doesnt even timeout or give me an error, it just sits there "Activating [email address]"

Seeing as it's not a critical thing, and it's not working even though I've tried both ways and I'm not being given any error messages, I'll wait for my boss to come back and let him do it. Then see where I maybe missed a step or something.

Does the etp.dat message just sit in the mail file? It shouldn't, the BES should see it, process it and delete it. If it's not being deleted then there is likely a permissions issue on the mail file.

Since the message reaches the user's mailbox, but then doesn't immediately disappear... this is indicative of a permissions problem on the BES service account.

Go through this KB article to verify that the permissions are set properly, and that BES is able to access the user's mailbox:
KB02276 - Assigning permissions for a BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account - Port3101.org : Your BES Connection

Yeah so for now I'm not going to try changing permissions and stuff like that.

We've actually got another user who's geting a new blackberry so we'll have to run the enterprise activation on that one too.

I talked with my co-worker and he mentioned that he's has some trouble trying it before and just went to our boss who was like "Click, Click.. oh you need to do this first"

I appreciate the help, and YES it's supposed to be straight forward and simple with only a few steps, but it's just not happening here...

Boss is back on Monday, I'll post the results of what ended up happening then

Thanks guys

i usually have the handset connected to the BES server, as we normally check the OS version is up to date before issuing, and when i had BES 4.0, we used the handset manager to assign the handset to the user - activation then took about 4 - 5 mins via USB, and only 'hung' for a while when copying the user's typically HUGE contacts list.

OTA activation takes too long and costs you in data transfer, USB activation works well for me.
