Welcome to the forums (both of you).
Back up your current 2gb card to your PC. Insert the 16gb in your device and format it. Then copy the data from you PC to your new card.
The SD card will only hold media, no contacts, calendar appointments, SMS, email, etc will be stored on the media card.
