Question whether my BB is brand new?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I just odered Bold 9000 on Amazon.com a few days ago. It is kind of the International unlocked version with warranty. I was told the item condition was new at that time.
When opened my package, I found the phone box was not sealed, not like the one I previously bought in an AT&T store (it was stolen).
Now I could not even tell whether this guy is brand new.
Could anyone have any idea on how to identify whether it is a new one?
Thanks in advance.

Sandy

What is this supposed to accomplish? First of all there is no Status in Phone options, and how does this tell the Op if the device is brand new or not?

Its hard to tell for certain, but the odds of an UNLOCKED Bold 9000 being BRAND NEW are slim to none.

As far as I know, the only way to tell if it's brand new is to call RIM and see if you still have 1year manufacturer's warranty on it.

Options - status is a known option, where you can see file free, battery, pin, and wlan mac address, as well (if memory serves) uptime.

Uptime of more than the device was turned on by the OP would suggest its not new.

Also, unlocked, i.e. SIM Free devices from places like Amazon are brand new. They are direct from RIM devices, (at least originally, I suppose it could have been a return) to the distributers.

Wirelessly posted

Go to Options -- Status and type buyr. A hidden menu would appear listing total voice and data use along with any security policy.
You can tell by those numbers if the handset is new or not.

Apparently this is different on different phones. I have two Tours and you find this by pressing the send key (green phone), menu button, and then the item Status shows up (not under options but as it's own menu item). It shows last call and total calls. Assuming that it is showing the duration.

(I am on on OS 5.0.0.732)

To me it would be simple, the box had been opened. I would return it.

It does show the call duration (last and total). Those timers cannot be trusted though to extrapolate any meaningful information about the handset's history since they can both be reset on the handset.

Going to Options -- Status and typing buyr would bring up a hidden menu with total call and data use info, and that data survives even software wipes.

To the OP: If you bought the handset brand new and it arrived in a tampered box you should return it. It's not what you paid for, unless the item's description says otherwise and you missed some important smallprint.

have you checked reviews for the seller you purchased from?

i wonder if anyone else reported problems like this. could clue you in to how likely it is that this is a used device.
