It looks like they are working on a new 71xx blackberry with edge and umts based on the 8700 sound system here is my proof it is from the hongkong csl 4.1 bb os release device xml and platform.alx. here is my proof you can look for your self in the hong kong csl relewase.
Platform.alx hong kong csl 4.1
standard 7100 gprs model 7100 g/t/v/x and 7105t
<os radio="GPRS" series="7100" Colour="True" radioOS="1.8" Theme="Normal" JVMLevel="1.0" KeyboardType="Reduced" MMS="True" Bluetooth="True" Sound="MidiAdpcm2" SystemSize="normal">GPRS/rim7100g.bin</os>
What i whould dub 7130c here are the gprs strings
<os radio="GPRS" series="7100" Colour="True" Theme="Normal" JVMLevel="1.0" KeyboardType="Reduced" MMS="True" Bluetooth="True" Sound="Tunes8700g" SystemSize="normal">GPRS/rim7130g.sfi</os>
these are teh umtsstrings as we know when you have a high speed berry that have edge like the 8700 the have 2 radio file.
<os radio="UMTS" series="7100" Colour="True" Theme="Normal" JVMLevel="1.0" KeyboardType="Reduced" Sound="Tunes7130c" SystemSize="normal" Bluetooth="True" MMS="True">UMTS/rim7130u.bin</os>
8700 hmmm intresting it says 7130 sound New model?????
I would believe that this secound file is the UMTS radio modem side and edge is actually in the standard gprs modem fiile as it is merely and extension of the gprs side where as umts is a slighlty differnt radio designfrom my understanding, that gsm/gprs are in the testing phase of here in america.
If blackberry doesn't suffer to bad from this ntp bullshit i will surly buy a unit that does umts. but till that time i will stay with my sk65. but umts has promising high speed theroretical speed above 10Mbps from my research wich would be nice to have a cable connection speed in your pocket. tough i do see Wi-Max as a more pratical concept for its more native ip design and long range and very high speed with curent pre Wi-Max. and the on coming of Vo-ip technology seem like a much better idea allowing clearer signal and and faster sped as it is a truely all digital network design.
