It will be interesting to see what happens then. I would hope I'm wrong, but I just have this feeling. I can think of no other reason that two identical devices running the exact same OS would show different options except for Vendor IDs.

I think I see what your saying but I don't think It works like that. Wouldn't the os not even load onto the device if it could check for the I'd, isn't that why the vendor file is deketed?

Does the vendor file only check for what branding the handset is? Or does it also disable some features?

try another carrier theme. I have a sinking feeling RIM has these restrictions are based on the carrier theme. Same as why I am not seeing BB maps on the AT&T theme, but I can with any other theme.

BBMaps is the lbx file and no service book. This is either the SIM card or the device lock.

Then why am I able to get the maps icon when I switch to other themes (same device, same OS). Also, the service book is there and works, just not under the AT&T theme.

Ulocked Rogers 9000; .167 OS. On ATT Network.
When I used the ATT Theme, I didn't have BBMaps. On other themes, I do have BBMaps.

AT&T has always locked the option to change carrier on a BlackBerry. This option is actually in the SIM. They have locked the 2G & 3G option as well.
If you get the device unlocked and insert a Rogers SIM the option will return while the Rogers SIM is inserted. Upon returning to the AT&T SIM the option will be locked.
There is a long history with AT&T and this lock. The only way to remove the lock would be for AT&T to make the change on their network.

That's can't be right. Everyone with rogers unlocked bolds on ATT have the option for 2g only so it can't be the sim card since their using an ATT one. I can see not being able to change carriers like you can with tmobile but it doesn't make sense to not allow 2g only, it should only be easier on their network.

I still believe part of the lock is in the SIM but probably also is in the AT&T branded firmware.
Added with edit: I wanted to clarify my statement. If an AT&T SIM card is in the device the option should be locked. Any other SIM in an unlocked AT&T Bold should allow the option.

But if you look a few posts up as well as ask anyone else with an unlocked bold on ATT, they all have the option for 2g only, so it can't be the sim card

I am talking about a Branded AT&T Bold on AT&T. Not a Rogers Bold on AT&T that is different firmware.

This is a quote from the link you provided:
Quote:
The ATT SIM card prevents manual network selection. Though my phone is unlocked, and I can use other SIM cards in the phone, when the ATT SIM card is in the phone, manual selection is not an option.
|
This does not happen to me. I firmly believe the SIM card has nothing to do with it, unless its specifically an AT&T SIM card on an AT&T device. My Rogers Bold with an AT&T SIM card works as expected, and that is why I don't think the SIM card is the issue. I stick by my original theory that it is the Vendor ID locked into the device that determines what the OS enables/disables.

It is locked by an AT&T SIM Card in an AT&T Branded (firmware) device. I don't want anyone to be confused that it is based on an OS. It is the underlying firmware.
Just like you can't use Rogers UMA on the TMO network it is controlled via firmware.

So we need someone with an ATT branded Bold and an ATT SIM and see if switching themes brings back the maps icon and 2G/3G options. If the answer is no then I believe Troy would be correct.
For what it is worth, I just spoke to a RIM engineer I know and he is going to pull this device on Monday and see what is in fact happening.

There's a girl on crackberry named kutiekayla or something that has one, I've asked several times for her to check and she either ignores the question or barely gives an answer.

So then then the only way to do this would be to have it on another carrier. Yuck.

Yep. I agree with Troy. That setting is tied to the carrier provisioning on the sim card. I've seen this with other devices when swapping sims. Some carriers allow you to manually switch, and others don't. ATT doesn't allow you to manually switch. Pop a TMobile sim into the same device and the options come up. Obviously, the device would need to be unlocked but unlocking by itself isn't what it's tied to.

They (AT&T) allow it on the iPhone (i.e. the ability to disable 3G)....I wonder why they would not on the Bold.
