I've never figured this business out. Who the hell cares if one uses a BB without a data plan?????? My daughter has used a white 8100 and now uses a Curve 8320 with no data plan. My wife used to use an 8100 with no data plan and now uses a Curve 8320. We finally did get her a data plan just for the ability to send calendar appointments back and forth but she could really care less about her email.

It's not a "scam" to use it without a data plan and to use apps that use wifi.

lol, everything you have said enforces the statment 'you can not use a BB w/o data plan'. Nothing you have said is any indication of a Bold working as good w/o a plan. All you have said is also available on other devices. You should have bought a Razer!

It's not necessary for everyone either. There's nothing to debate. You're wrong. End of story. Move along now.

There's really nothing to debate. It's a matter of what one wants/needs. My sister and her boyfriend both have Pearls with no data plan. They have no want to use email or the browser. They never ask for workarounds. They like the feel and size of the device and just use it for phone and SMS. In that case, it is not necessary as you say.

On the other hand, my brother and I both have Curves and data plans. We rely on the data features such as email. To each their own. It's a matter of what the person needs.

Personally, I don't think I could use a BlackBerry without a data plan after having one. It would almost be like going from broadband back to dial-up. That's just me.

What's are Razer?

Do you mean a razor? Like something I shave with?

Perhaps a Razer mouse? ... they're pretty sweet actually.

Oh, you mean a Motorola RAZR? Why would I want that device with a small screen when I could get a pretty Bold screen. I can also sync my contacts / calendar to my bold and have a pretty interface ... can't get that on a RAZR.

Your ignorance is abounding.

You're digging a hole that you can't get out of. It's not even "necessary." It's only "necessary" if you want email and and access to the features that come with the data plan. If you like the organizer features, keypad, reliability, etc. of a BlackBerry but don't need email or data then the BlackBerry is one of MANY devices that will work quite well for that.

Personally, I would go through withdrawls without my data plan. However, that doesn't make it "required" or "necessary."

End of story.

I'm not all correct here...The GMail app will work with a basic cell phone data plan using TCP. So, you can even get email without a specific "BlackBerry" data plan.

my best friend has a bb and she's using it with only a basic gprs plan, she doesn't care about her email. so does she really need a full-blown data plan? not really.

but i am also of the notion, that a bb without a data plan is just not savvy, but that is because i have been using a bb for so long, for everything, that when i had to use my Sony Ericsson when my Pearl crashed, i felt handicapped. it's just me i guess.

when i was overseas, i put in another sim into my unlocked pearl and that had no data either and it was awful. but hey each to their own i supoose.

don't shoot me, i'm just giving my own two cents.

My Mom has a blackberry 8220 with no data plan. It's a great phone with her because I can take care of her contact list on the computer using Outlook and be sure she has everyone listed that she needs. It is easy for her to use and can change the fonts so that it's easy to read the screen. She even started using text messages after she got this phone so we did add feature enabler so she could als send/receive messages with photos. But she has no desire or want to use it for email and internet browsing. She just likes it as a phone and it works well for her.

I can't imagine not having the data plan on mine because I like my email. I could live without my internet but the email has spoiled me. But Mom certainly doesn't need it. (Heck, she doesn't even read it on the computer every day.)

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Exactly. The data plan is nice and is what the BB is made for. However, its FAR from required or necessary. There are some carriers that require you to have the data plan, though. Usually its the cdma carriers. But again, its not required for the BB to be a nice phone/organizer.

This argument has been beaten to death on many forums.

You pays your money, you can use it as you please. Criticizing someone who chooses not to have a data plan is like criticizing Porsche owners for never exceeding the speed limit.

If helpful was a criteria for posting, you would have locked this thread already.

Well, your post above wasn't helpful yet you posted it anyway. I agree with you but, personally, don't see a reason to lock the thread.
