I am looking forward to the 9850 for the lighting speed, memory, and screen resolution it will offer, I will get use to the virtual keyboard as it can't be that bad. I am not getting rid of my Style when I do upgrade, keeping for a back up.

I just ordered the 9850 from Sprint to upgrade my work device. Will also keep the Style as a backup.....or if I don't like the 9850, I'll just upgrade again to the 9930

@GrandMstrBud, have you used the this Torch to say it has a smaller vitual keyboard than some other devices? I didn't think it was out yet?

I am using one now and the virtual keyboard is nice but it's just a bit smaller than say the android or iPhone virtual keyboards. If you put it in landscape mode then it's not to bad. The battery life is no where near what people are used to with the Blackberries.

Thanks for the info, so the 1350 MAH battery doesn't last a day? Are you on CDMA technology?

Grand Stevie, what device did you use before? GSM devices have always had longer lasting batteries than CDMA devices. My 9650 barely lasts to the end of the day if I use it a lot, and that's without talking on it.

I have the GSM version and I can't even get a day out of it. I had it off the charger at night and woke up to 65% just from being in standby. And yes that was from a full charge. BB OS 7 is still beta I believe so it could get better. I'll try tomorrow and see about what time it goes dead without charging it. I've been charging it just because I almost always have a charger wherever I'm at.

Today I got 9 hours of it. I probably spent 30 minutes of voice usage and very light email and messaging. I'm guessing maybe 15 minutes of messaging and email use.

Does anyone else find this all to be rather humorous - or at least quite ironic? The original motivation for cell phones was to allow us to talk anywhere, and not be tethered to a location by wires. Now, the "latest and greatest" phones are getting to the point where we can't use them for even an entire day without tethering them back to power often during the day.

With each new BlackBerry model I've gotten over the years, the battery life has been less, but even with the Torch 9800 I almost always make it through a full day and put it on the charge cradle when I go to bed, so that still works.

Probably the biggest drawback (in my opinion) to the iPhone and all the new Android phones with their fast CPU's and huge, gorgeous screens has been the very poor battery life. Now RIM appears to have joined the crowd with the 9850/9860. I have a good friend I play golf with, who's company just "upgraded" his BlackBerry Bold to one of those beautiful-screen Android devices. We both use the same golf GPS app (GolfLogix.) If we use his phone, his fully-charged battery is about dead after 9 holes. If we use my 9800, my fully-charged battery is at about 60% after 18 holes. Guess which one we use? I know he sure doesn't consider this to be an "upgrade" for him.

It seems if the smartphones have with their dual-core Gigahertz CPU's and huge hi-res screens have gotten to the point where they won't even hold up through a normal day's usage without being repeatedly charged, that this whole craze has gone a bit too far. I guess I won't be considering the 9850/9860, and will be very interested to hear the reports on battery life for the new 9810.

(Yeah, I realize that apparently there are lots who disagree, and seem happy to turn their wireless phones back into wired phones for significant portions of the day, just so the thing doesn't die before the day's over.)

Yesterday my local Sprint store (non-corporate) out here in the wilds of northern New Jersey showed them as "backordered". Odd in that the 9930 was there in the store but the 9850 was still MIA.

Consumers are driving the product. They want more capability, faster processors and richer features, but in a smaller package. Until someone comes out with a nuclear battery in a tiny configuration, you are going to see shorter and shorter battery life, IMHO.

If you have tried out the PlayBook yet you will know that the touch keyboard is a very good one. From what I see with OS7 is that it is nearly the QNX OS. And that OS is rock solid.

*spelling error*
Says the guy that made the spelling error - I hope that wasn't on a Storm, Torch or PlayBooks' touchscreen. I would NOT state that the QNX is rock solid - I've already found a major issue that even RIM's level 3 could not resolve before placing an RMA = if you install firmware and there is a hardware issue with the WLAN/BT chip - you CANNOT pass the introduction screens beyond associating to a WLAN AP or HotSpot. You cannot even re-download the firmware of the PlayBook to further troubleshoot. This is a GLARING oversight in my opinion.

Agreed - well, on everything except maybe the "smaller package" part. The screen resolution lately seems to be driving the package size back UP, although not enough to stuff in a battery to power it reasonably.

It just seems to me like at some point, the consumer would realize that their near-tablet smartphone that has to be plugged in half the day has lost much of its basic usefulness as a mobile phone. Maybe I'm wrong though - I just hope there will continue to be enough of a market out there for manufacturers to make some smartphones who's battery will realistically last a full day, to satisfy those of us who still want a mobile phone through the day!

By "smaller package" I meant thinner and lighter.

No arguments then - not that I was really arguing anyway. Mostly just lamenting the fact that the market seems to be driving the manufacturers more and more towards "mini-tablets" with feature sets approaching that of a real tablet - vs. a more traditional smartphone, and requiring power way beyond the ability of a reasonable battery to supply without frequent charging throughout the day.

Got mine activated for work today. Very nice device. After holding it, my iPhone 4 feels like a brick. Love the screen and scrolling is smooth. Some reports of accelerometer being slow, but I haven't noticed it.

My BB ID is messed up, though.... Have to resolve that tomorrow.
