Nah same speaker I mean the way it sounds for instance speakerphone on a call sounds fine, little lower than 8700, but when you play back an mp3, forget about it. RIM's stock is below $80 for the first time since I started leaking, maybe everyones not too thrilled with the exact specs now that its announced

When the 7100 series came out, didn't the T-Mobile version have a lot more problems and technical glitches than the Cingular version? Just wondering if some of the technical issues would be addressed by a different version/carrier?

Hey boy genius
So I have been holding off on an upgrade since I fell out of love with my 7100T(7230 prior) mostly due to phone mic issues early on and then the want for edge or something faster then GPRS.
Should I not purchase this one instead purchase the 8700? or wait for these features to be perfected and introduced with full qwerty?

how about getting the 8700 now..return it when the 8100 comes out and play with the 8100..then u'll be able to decide if u wana take it back for the 8700 or keep the 8100. i have the 8700 and LOVE IT!! I'm planning on getting the 8100 when it comes out and if its not up to par i'll just return it to the store...thats the beauty of TMO

I usually sim swap on the weekends. I've been using a Motorola V3i but now I use my 8700r during the week and 8100 on the weekends. This way I have my email still, I get media player which is nice and if I want to snap a quick pic with the family I don't have to run to grab the digital camera from the den or car or wherever it may be.

Anyone believe that the quality of the Cingular version may be higher? Sometimes changes in the case and keyboard can have a real effect even if the guts are the same. They can also choose a better speaker if they want.
I mainly want this for the voice recognition, but it is a big disappointment that you can't even use the player with Bluetooth headsets.

Couldn't the OS issues be addressed with a firmware upgrade? Palm did that with the Treo 650 and it made a big difference in the device's stability. Of course, if it's a hardware issue (like the inadaquate amount of RAM in Treos) then we're SOL.

I'm sure OS upgrades will resolve issues that 8100 users may find. I'm glad RIM finally has a consumer friendly BlackBerry with multimedia capability and I'm sure next gen BlackBerries after the 8100 will improve be it stability, build factor, etc...

It could also improve the phone qulity
FW upgrades have been know to improve the vocie quality too. I hope the digitzed voice issue was only with the cnet unit. I am buying this as a phone first.

For me it's going to be an email and PIM device first, but the phone quallity is critical as well. If they've been working on this for 3 years as BG has said, you'd think they have had adaquate time to get it right. Lets hope an FW udated to fix any faults is not another 3 years in the making!

I know I have said this in other forums... but I kind of find it pathetic that RIM release this new device 3 years in the making and the dam thing is still an EDGE radio.... no UMTS/HSDPA..... I mean what the hell... all the new PDA's coming out right after this will have HSDPA like Samsung, the 8525 (I think) etc.... if Samsung and other vendors could have gotten the HSDPA chipset ,why not blackberry.... I really want a balckberry bad since I have been without... but I might just wind up getting the Samsung Blackjack becuase tethering and HSDPA is important to me....

HSDPA is faster speeds around 400K-1Mbps.... it supposed to be the equilvant to EVDO revA but only time will tell.
and the other person is right, it allows you to use your phone as an external modem to use with you laptop etc... (that way you dont need a seperate PCMCIA card) |

Keep in mind that HSDPA will not be available in nearly all markets, even by the Holiday season. In fact, Cingular has turned on HSDPA in very few locations by now, and who knows how effective they will be in rolling this new service out by the end of the year.
So HSDPA is great, but only if its available.
It's interesting that most of Cingular's new models for the holidays will still be EDGE, not 3G UMTS or HSDPA. For instance, the new small Moto, the KRZR, will only be EDGE. That indicates to me that Cingular isn't so confident they will have a full 3G rollout by Christmas.
