Location Based Services are being implemented slowly, but are not available through the BES yet as a functional feature.

It would also require that the handheld have GPS.. and of course, have it on.

I guess, the only other way would be to have installed with the user's knowledge, some third party tracking app like BlackBerryTracker. And again, have GPS on the device.

Look into Telenav .. they have a app that will do this. I saw a demo based on salesman / truckers and it's slick (but scary) ..

I should clarify.

The stuff in the BES will be mostly raw data that can be accessed by other applications I believe.

If Google release an API for their latest "Maps" (the version that guesses position based on the cell tower that you're connected to) you might not need a GPS. Here in the UK it's good enough to "within a few miles" on one of the 900MHz networks. Not a replacement for GPS, but saves a bit of scrolling if you want a map of your current location.

I suspect that that data - especially the "which mast are people actually connected to from where" info - would be worth quite a bit though!

what about triangulation??

There are mobile phone tracking web sites which just use the mobile phone masts to find a rough location

these can track a regular mobile, providing the user has replied by text to agree to be tracked in the future, so as long as the user has signal, then you should be able track that way

I have Telenav and haven't seen this feature either on the website or on my 8310.
