Default Life on Other Planets

Please Login to Remove!

So what do you think?

I personally believe there has to be. If there is a chance for us to be here, then why not others on other planets?

I'll post more on my thoughts later, but have at 'em.

If space is infinite, then the chances for life on another planet approach infinity.

I would go as far as to say other civilizations have lived and died on other planets.

Although the balance of life is precarious, the fact that we are here would indicate that it's certainly possible on another planet. There can't be just one planet in the universe that can sustain life (as we know life), so out of those planets there had to have been, will be or is some form of life.

OK, so I maybe should change my name to Richard Head for what I'm about to post, but wouldn't the "chances" (or odds) be approaching 1.0 (or certainty) as opposed to infinity???

I knew I was going to screw that up! And I knew that you would be there for me as our resident statistician.

So what's your answer to the question?

Edit: What if I said that there are infinite chances? Is that still screwed up or a better way to state it?

Life on other planets? Heck, there's life under my son's bed.

This is much less sensitive then I thought it would be!

My boyfriend thinks Jesus was an alien. That's how he came down from heaven and had those superpowers.

Life on other planets - very likely
Chance life on other planet is similiar to Earth life - remote
Chance life on Earth will meet them - very remote

Now for the twenty nine cent question:

Define life

You know I was just busting your chops, right?

I would incorporate what you said state it as follows: Because space is infinite, there are an infinite number of opportunities for life to develop on other planets, and as such the odds that life exists on another planet must approach certainty (or 1.0, or 100%).

To T-BOLT's posting above. Interesting. I guess I would agree with all that. Especially the part about us meeting them/it. The one item that I would add to is, is life similar to life on other planets. I think the basic building blocks for the beginning of life are not unique to earth, but are ubiquitous throughout galaxies near and far. So at least the spark for early molecular activity, given some catalysts, would be similar. So I would venture to guess that life on other planets might more be similar than we would at first think.

Absolutely, yes I did. And I left myself wide open for a good busting.

Right! Exactly what I was thinking. But much more eloquently and properly stated.

All this reminds me of a scene from the movie Animal House. Otter was talking to the professor (Donald Sutherland) after partaking of some kind of drugs. Otter was saying 'you mean a atom in my thumb nail could actually be an entire universe?'.

Or like in Men in Black where the galaxy is inside a marble.

When my wife told me that I lost my marbles, does that mean I lost the galaxies too? This is interesting because a friend of mine used to have a Ford Galaxy 500 and it was a cool old car. Does that mean that galaxies inside of marbles will be cool?

Ban this thread for excessive eloquence.

I'm sure there's life out there somewhere.

On a related note, I'm personally convinced that the rings around Saturn are made up of unmated socks and lost airline luggage.

The Federation has banned relationships between unmarried socks.

I think your boyfriend is mixing religions. I thought the alien was known as Xenu from Scientology, not Jesus from Christianity.

No, no...no...

It's just the way he... thinks...

I use the word "think" sparingly. He always has these crackpot ideas on how things work. But that's what makes him fun for me.
