I looked at a Tour Sunday and the sales lady let me install Speedtest on it. Just as we were both expecting it to blow away my curve on T-Mobile, it didn't.

The download speed were virtually the same (~300kbits/s) and the upload speed was only 80kbits/s.

Is this normal? Was it really connected to the 3G network? If so, my buddy who has the Bold gets 1,716 down and 81 up.


Can everyone post the results from speedtest here to compare?

My results - Very impressed!!

Download speed is: 1324.12 Kbits/s
Max Speed is: 1348.96 Kbits/s

Upload speed is: 40.66 Kbits/s
Mak speed is: 42.26 Kbits/s

So I tested again right away to make sure it wasn't a fluke:

Download speed is: 576.09 Kbits/s
Max Speed is: 2882.91 Kbits/s

Upload speed is: 58.2 Kbits/s
Mak speed is: 64.42 Kbits/s

And one more time just for fun:

Download speed is: 1111.8 Kbits/s
Max Speed is: 2882.91 Kbits/s

Upload speed is: 49.76 Kbits/s
Mak speed is: 64.42 Kbits/s

Apparently "Max Speed" is max speed during the current session of the software. Closing it and restarting it reset the counter.

One last test after re-opening gave this result:

Download speed is: 624.45 Kbits/s
Max Speed is: 1064.25 Kbits/s

Upload speed is: 42.7 Kbits/s
Mak speed is: 42.7 Kbits/s

Speed depends on many factors, most of which are outside your control. Some are: the device (EDGE or 3G), the processor, memory, the connection, distance to the tower, tower congestion and couple others.

Speeds vary because of the above, but generally, EDGE is 50-125 kbps with a max of 384 kbps. 3G/EVDO is 400-900 kbps with a max up to about 3.5 mbps.

In your case you are comparing apples to oranges as the devices are not side by side and connecting to the same sites.

Exactly. I put up my t-mobile Edge next to a Verizon Tour on 3G and ran the speedtest at the same. The results were very disappointing for the Tour (almost same download speed and just incrementally faster up). I wanted to see how much faster the Tour (a faster device on a faster network) would be than the Curve.....but it wasn't faster at all really.

No, not really. I used the same speedtest (link above) tool to test and ran the test a few times at the same time right next to each other. I tried going to another Verizon store today in a different area to test again, but the store didn't have a working Tour to test on and would not activate one either.


Really, the purpose of this thread is to see what results people are getting from their Tour on the Verizon network as a whole. I was shocked and disappointed that my EDGE phone was on par with the 3G phone while I was expecting fast or faster results like I saw on the ATT Bold. It could just be the area I was in, or the network in general.

This thread will help understand the speed of the device on the network.

Was the Tour showing a 1X or 1XEV at the time?

1XEV in caps. I thought it was going to say "3G", but did some googling and found that 1XEV in caps is 3G.

My iPhone 3Gs blew my Tour out of the water. I seriously was
not expecting it to be that off sided. But in racing them against each other, and going to the same sites had the iPhone winning every time. Not by a little but alot. Opening apps was a lil slow on the Tour as well. Just for fun I put the Tour up against my wifes Bold, pretty much the same issue with the Bold beating the Tour. All in all, the Tour is not the speed demon that I thought it would be,
and vzw's CDMA 3G may be losing a step or two.

I would expect a bit more from a device that EVDO RevA.. Of course as stated already, this depends on many factors.

Using the BlackBerry default browser is not really a fair speed test. If you are just wanting to look at browser speed, try using Bolt or Opera Mini on the Tour.

Agreed. The BlackBerry Browser is convenient but kind of a kludge. Opera Mini is WAY faster. I imaging Bold has the potential to be even faster than Opera Mini.

I just did the speedtest app with my 9630 in Richmond, VA area on business with 1XEV coverage (no idea how to tell if it is Rev A) and got the following:

Download 2187 Kbps / 4951 Kbps Max
Upload 73 Kbps / 110 Kbps Max

I am very impressed .... the first thing I noticed is the overall speed improvement over the 8830 (combination of things as mentioned above).

I am loving the Tour ...

Opera Mini is a bad indicator of speed. It uses proxy servers and the speed test results are generally the speed between the proxies, not from the BB to the web.

Definitely sounds Rev A to me!!

Another thing that you want to consider is whether the maker of this little speed test application has taken compression into account.

Testing via a browser isn't going to be a fair representation on a Blackberry. There is compression and image manipulation being done at varying levels with all the browsers. Particularly Bolt and Opera, where so much of the work never even gets done on the device, so less data (i.e scripts, java, etc.)

I would say the BEST way to test is to tether to a computer and then test with a standard test site like speedtest.net.

4951 kbps (4.5 mbps) is impossible on EVDO Rev A. Highest speed possible is in the 2.5 mbps range.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a tiny burst of data that computed to that speed. The application being used peaks that value very quickly. I ran a test earlier and got a value over 2 mbps even though the entire test ended up being in the 400 kbps.

I am very consistently getting around 1 mbps down and 80 kbps up.

Well - I am just reporting what the app says I was really less focused on the max and more looking at the average of 2.1Mbps !!!

Just did a few more times and download avg speeds were:

1337 Kbps
2493 Kbps
2395 Kbps

Again ... I am impressed ... I just hope my results at home (Raleigh, NC) are as good.

I am so tired of Apple fanbois coming in here talking about an iPhone. He was talking about a Blackberry, not an iPhone. The verizon coverage in the area could have been horrible and the AT&T coverage may have been better.

Easy on what you say friend, who said I was an apple fan boy? Was only stating the truth in the real world! I doubt that makes me a fanboy! And for your info I've had just about every single Blackberry to date, that runs on either Verizon or at&t. My iPhone is a pesonal line, and Blackberry runs my Business line. Truth being told is that the iPhone 3Gs is faster in every which way as far as data speed goes. Did you hear me say anything further about emal being better or it just killing it in every other field, ofcourse not! I am and always will be a Blackberry user, an oem case with some sort of model number will be right on my hip. So be carefully spoken when you start shouting out your sick of people coming here and what not. Compairing devices exists, even when it involves other makes and models. Enough said!
