Just looking at the spec's for the new Curve. Seems to have WiFi, GPS, high-res screen, full keyboard etc... Is it effectively just a smaller version of the Bold or are you sacrificing anything that its big brother has?

The main issue is the 8900 lacks 3G, deal breaker for some but not all!

ah ok! Having used the Bold with 3G in the UK for a few months now, I wouldn't be too upset about not having 3G as long as I had WiFi. There must be a good chance that a newer version of the curve will have 3G at some point?

What's the point though? Isn't that gonna make it too similar to Bold?

And also, what do you guys think of the 8900 keyboard? It's better then the old Curve but I still think the keyboard on the Bold is way better. Much softer when you press the keys and it's just more comfortable..

But if you look at the old line up, the Curve was just a smaller version of the 8800? It just came out a bit afterwards too?

Yeah but, the 8800 and 8300 came out at the same time, at which point the 8800 had GPS (no wifi) and the 8300 had no GPS or Wifi.

Then came out the 8310 which had GPS but no wifi, and the 8320 which had wifi but no GPS, and the 8820 had both GPS and Wifi. So if you wanted both you had to buy the 8800, making it the top of the line device.

Now they both have wifi and gps, but if you give 3g to the curve then the bold doesn't really have any advantages..

The 8800 doesn't have WiFi (I have one). And in the UK, at least, the Curve 8300 came out several months after the 8800.

I would not understate what you miss without 3G. It's a huge deal for me to be able to send and receive (or browse the internet) while talking on the phone.

I would love to have it on my corporate blackberry - which is the 8800 - because when travelling I'm often on one hour conf calls and it would be great to get emails while on those calls. However, with all the cost cutting, I'm unlikely to get a Bold replacement any time soon!

My Bold is my personal Blackberry - and I generally don't make any calls longer than a few minutes..... so its not a huge issue for me.

I know, re read my post. I said that it has GPS but not wifi.

The point I'm making is that 88XX was always ahead of the Curve in terms of features.

When the first generation devices came out is was 8800 vs 8300, the 8800 has GPS (but not wifi), the 8300 didn't have GPS or wifi.

The second generation the 8820 had BOTH, but with a Curve you could never have both GPS and Wifi. You had to choose either the 8310 which has only GPS, or the 8320 which had only Wifi.

Ok - I understand - fair point!

I think I'll wait for the GPS & 3G Curve - at that point I'll have had the Bold for at least 8 or 9 months probably and will be able to justify the upgrade to myself! lol!

When it comes to Verizon (probably in about 10 years) it will have to be 3G....of course, GPS won't work for free and it probably won't have wifi, but eh, you learn to do without I guess as long as I have The Network.

also a big difference between 8800 and 8300 series was the curve's camera and 8800 lack therof. So one was more "consumer" and the other more "corporate".

So now with bold and javelin both having cameras along with similar features such as wifi and gps i would have to agree with blitzsix on his point.

the only feature that makes javelin more "consumer" now is 3.2mp autofocus camera. Not such a big difference between the 2 devices on the surface (not everyone who buys a blackberry will be aware of the faster procesor in Bold or how javelin uses 256mb for OS and apps compared to all other bb's 128mb.

This is my biggest deal breaker feature. I would love to have a badass camera *and* 3G like I did on the e71, but if I have to choose it will be camera every time.

The advantages of the Bold are:

-Stereo speakers
-~100mhz faster processor (6xx mhz vs 5xx mhz IIRC)
-3g (obviously)
-leather(ette) battery door
-It is the last BB to use the miniUSB port, allowing those with legacy chargers and accessories to get a little more use out of them.

Subjectively some people may also prefer the Bolds keyboard design or added heft.
