Default OS 4.5.0.46 Memory Test

Please Login to Remove!

figured i'd try this out to see how awful the memory leak is, to see if the upgrade is worth it to you on this factor alone. OS 4.5.0.46 on a T-Mobile 8320. All diagnostic and reporting programs removed, i.e. battery log, quincy. this is not at all scientific or indicative of what you should expect. this is only what i observed on my device with the following atmosphere. for entertainment purposes only.

removed items:
task list
bb messenger
faves icons
sample video
dimension icon theme
dimension theme
event log cleared and turned off
BrickBreaker

installed:
jivetalk
bblight (activated @ 2250)
Google Maps 2.0.2
Bubble Popper

remaining memory open after install and settings changes(in bytes): 25439112

(taken at 14 minutes after recording began)

You should cover your IMEI as soon as possible. The information youve provided is great, just want you to protect yourself...

In 50 minutes you lost a meg?
If you had run a control test exactly the same with the previous OS we'd have something to point at.
Still nice job. Thanks.

like i said, it's not scientific in any way.

all i have for a control is my own experience with 4.2.2.180. i didnt lose memory with it, but if i did, it was so minute that it was unnoticeable... i reset about weekly due to various things, but never due to lack of memory. i always had 28.5MB whenever i opened up the help page on the previous OS.

if anyone has an idea, notion, or knowledge of where the leak may be, your input is especially welcome as i can turn things on or off to see if it helps.

simply going in and out of standby mode seems to sap the crap out of it.

the audio is completely different. much more bass heavy than compared to 4.2.2.180's audio settings... almost sounds muffled.

edit: turned off "audio boost". seems it now affects the ringers and/or they changed the default eq for audio boost.

Thumbs up 4.5.0.33 on Verizon 8330

Well after reading all the post and putting it off for a week, I made the plunge and installed 4.5.0.33 rel. 48. So far so good. The only thing I can't check out is sms and mms out of verizon network. I don't know anybody out of network. I did see my first html email, it's much better than all the links.

Sorry, I'm still new to the board and see I put this in the wrong place.

I ran Google maps (w/ BT GPS) for a 250 mile trip, and dropped from 22 MB down to 13 MB. And it never recovered.

Opera Mini also seems leaky too.

Want to give those a try?

4.5.0 OS's version audio is richer in bass. In my opinion, i like the audio sound better on 4.5.0., 4.2.2 sound has to much treble and makes your speaker crackle.

I agree with your assesment of the audio...as far as memory leak, I had very little when I was running .46 to the point it was virtually non-existant... I also have zero now as well...

with my config, i'm not seeing a memory leak. yeah, programs may take up memory here and there, but they seem to be releasing it in a timely manner.

unfortunately, i had to reset the device a couple of times for software updates/installs (docs to go, google maps) so i abandoned this little project. i'll probably restart the project once things slow down for me this afternoon.

but from what i can see, there is no (significant) memory leak with 4.5.0.46... but i'm sure some apps built for 4.2.2.xxx being used on 4.5OS may not be optimized and thus have its own memory leak. bu those that do seem to be improperly blaming the OS instead of properly troubleshooting the issue. (Viigo on 4.5, for example)

you just have to wait until the apps you use daily are optimized for the new OS... some just universally are, while most arent. just like any other operating system, some legacy devices/drivers/apps will not work properly on a new release.

OEM programs, not third party apps. some people believe there is a memory leak in the operating system, and i'd like to try and find it so i can minimize its impact since i'm choosing to run this OS release daily, so stability is important to me.

simple logic already tells me there will be various issues running legacy code on the new OS.
