i installed .592 OS on pc, deleted vendor.xml, ran apploader and apploader wont detect OS 5.0 it just shows my 3rd party apps. what went wrong here?

i remember attempting to install .592 but it failed but so i reverted back to 4.6. i want to give OS 5.0 another try, but this time its not even detected when i run apploader. any way to make apploader detect 5.0? the folder is right there i dont know why apploader is just showing my apps. also in DM it said update not required.

Do you have a BlackBerry data plan on your account?

no i do not, are all of these problems alleviated with a data plan?
if so ill just borrow a friend's sim. the work around doesnt work for me because i have no 4.6 folder to copy the 5.0 folder into.
the thing is the first time i tried it was detected, now this time it is not.
i wonder how could this be, ive done it once before but it failed during the initialization phase.
is a wipe needed?

Yes. 5.0 requires a data plan on the device in order to upgrade to it.

In order to have a 4.6 folder you need to install a 4.6 OS to the computer. Then you could do the workaround.

However, if you have a friend with a data plan and can use their sim, that would be the easiest.

YES! i have successfully loaded .592 without a data plan by doing the following

1. Installed .592 OS to computer
2. Deleted Vendor.xml
3. Opened up DM 5.0.1 and selected Application loader then selected Update Software
it shows OS 5.0 there with a asterisk* basically saying bb data plan users get this upgrade only.
4. I left DM open and went to the Apploader directory and ran apploader.exe it detected my phone and showed my PIN number
5. I opened this program called shrink-a-os and loaded apploader from there also and apploader said PIN UNKNOWN and i selected NEXT (if it goes through you did it right!), it showed 5.0 ready to load with all the check boxes and all that.
6. I then closed DM and the apploader that detected my PIN (NOT the one that said PIN UNKNOWN).
7. Then I disconnected my internet, i read that it prevents vendor.xml from showing up again while its setting up.
8. before starting the upgrade i only selected the language support english check box (one of the first boxes).
9. voila its loaded on to my phone, then afterwards i loaded the apps that came with 5.0.

i read up on the storm forums about this little glitch in the system, basically you connect your phone to DM and youre trying to get apploader to say PIN UNKNOWN that way it is able to detect the 5.0 folder and ready to load the OS.

the first time i loaded 5.0 it failed because i made it load all the apps along with the OS
this time it went through because i just installed the OS itself, then apps later.

i am enjoying threaded SMS and vibrate and ring simultaneously.

P.S. i know my directions dont seem very clean and clear cut but this is exactly what i did to work around apploader not letting me update, no BS. i also did this without wiping with BBSAK.

5.0 does not require a data plan to upgrade.
There's one way to bypass it.
Don't use the DM to upgrade and just use the apploader.exe application!! :D

No, even Loader.exe requires a data plan to load the OS. If you already have 5.0 then you don't need a data plan to upgrade to another version of 5.0. Also, some very early versions of 5.0 did not require the data plan to upgrade.

Just a quick question... I don't have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed on my PC.... Can I still do the OS upgrade on my PC without it per the instructions in the original post?

(Edit: Just saw the above posts and looks like I don't need Desktop Manager at all)

The instructions above say nothing about DM. You don't need it. Just follow the instructions.

Default Update without data plan

do with this method :
- turned device radio off (not sure this is necessary )
- start loader.exe and it lists just some add-on plug in ( no device software )
- leave it open AND Start loader.exe Again.
It cant detect pin and say unknown pin.
continue update progress with unknown pin and it list the new software (5.x.x)
then close first loader.exe and push next on second update instance and it updates the device.
now you have 5 OS without any data plan.
(tnx for someone that explain this method before)
