Default Bold, Curve or Storm for an older guy...

Please Login to Remove!

My dad is ready to buy a Blackberry. He asked me to help him out, but I'm a bit torn as to what to recommend him.

The main things he wants:

Syncing with his calendars on Windows XP and Ease of use. Easy to read keys and ease of typing.

He doesn't text message ever, so messaging capabilities are not important.

Thanks for any advice. -Danny

I have worked with both the Curve and the Storm. The Curve has an advantage over the storm with a fixed keyboard but the Storm has a better display which would be easier to read.

I'm an old dude...and i love my Pearl (8130)!
If your dad is anything like me, take him to the store and let him play with the choices for a few minutes. I thought I was going to get a Curve but liked the Pearl much better.

IMHO, and as an "old guy" myself, I would pick the one with the largest screen and the easiest to type (Bold or Curve). But the above advice to go to a store and let him play with the various models is the best idea.

Does he use Outlook for email, calendar, contacts etc? If so what version as that makes a difference in which version of Desktop Manager to use.

I would suggest the Bold. It is more age appropriate.

My (way) over 40 eyes vote for the Bold.

Ditto on the Bold. Great keyboard and easy to read screen.

How old is old? I am 53 and I like the curve. But then I txt, email and play with all the gadgets. I like the media player, use it as a radio. Read AP news all the time and play games. Not a big fan of the camera, I like my digital one better.

Thanks for all the advice. I think it will be the bold.

I'll have him visit a shop and play with a few different models just in case.

Get him the Jitterbug. LOL
Seriously, if you are going to relate any of these three devices toward the "old" crowd.. I'm feeling quite old myself for liking the Bold and only being 29.

To me, the old crowd want one thing.. A phone that makes calls and nothing more. You start throwing in different menus and pages for them to scroll through, they panic. They are in the least interested in a full keyboard or any for that matter since they don't have time to text. They are old fashioned and if they have to communicate, they'll place the actual call.

I am well over 50 and I text, email, surf the web and moderate on another BB board, often from my BB. The keyboard is also very important to me.

Your opinion is based on nothing factual.

I'm well into my fifties and have been writing and designing Operating System code since 1972. I was using the Internet in the 80s when it was ARPANET.

Yep, menus and page scrolling make me panic.....

It's a subjective matter no matter what the user's age is. Have him try them out in person.

For sure. I'm 63, got the Bold the first day they came out, and use all the apps(plus 9 that I downloaded) all the time. I love this thing!
Have him try both at the store.

No shortcut unfortunately. Give you some some exercise or you can change the scrolling sensitivity to make scrolling to the bottom quicker.
