Default Activation Server Address missing on 8700(OS4.5)

Please Login to Remove!

All,

I setup a BES Express server and have one pilot user on an OS v5 device that was able to activate and sync. My problem is I am trying to setup a BB 8700(os v4.5) and in the enterprise activation screen the activation server address is missing.

How do I specify my BES Express server on this device?

Thanks,

That field is only available on WiFi enabled devices, as it is used solely for WiFi activations.
It's not needed on a non-WiFi device.

Then what do I need to do to activate the non-wifi devices? Is there a specific domain prefix the BB's automatically go to? On the wifi devices with the server name specified activation works fine, the others time out trying to activate.

You enter the user's email address and activation password. Nothing more is needed.
Are you sure these devices are provisioned with an Enterprise Blackberry Data Plan? You'd need that do to a wireless Enterprise Activation.

If they only have a Personal BlackBerry Data Plan, then you can only do a wired EA using a USB cable.

They do only have the Personal BlackBerry data plan but according to this document: na.blackberry.com/eng/services/business/server/express/ComparisonChart_NA_021610_v3.pdf it only requires "Any Internet enabled BlackBerry data plan plus free BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express software and CALs." for BES express.

Is that not correct? The wifi enabled device i activated is syncing over the att network and not our wifi. Even if they did have the ent plan how would the blackberry know what server to go to without specifying it?

What is the wireless Enterprise Activation process

You need an Enterprise Data Plan for Wireless EA on BES Express. Period.
It's only required for wireless activations over the carrier's network. You can use a BIS data plan after the device has already been activated.

The WiFi device activated wirelessly without a BES data plan because it actually activated over your WLAN connection between the handheld and BES. The activation didn't occur over AT&T's network... it occurred locally.

That is disappointing and seems like an unnecessary limitation. Thanks for all of your help.

Unfortunately, it's where they drew the line. If the user is in your network, you can use the Desktop Manager and activate via usb as Penguin says.

Please remember, you're using a completely FREE product... and frankly I'm surprised at how feature-rich BESx is for what you're not paying for.

There still needs to be some significant differences between BESx and BES, else RIM would simply be cutting off one of their largest revenue streams.
