Well, in fact it can be done. The current solution may not be feasible in all situations. However there is a way to elimate dialpad tones when the numeric keys are pressed:

When I attach my 2.5 mm -> 3.5 mm audio adaptor plug the keypad is silent!

YMMV!

I never had tone dialing on mine, just the clicking sound of the trackball. I saw that option to enable and disable the tones, so it's there. You just have to be a blackberry explorer and explore your phone and its settings.

Once you have a live line and are using the DTMF menus, yes, but for the initial cellular dialing DTMF is irrelevant. When you are inputing the number to the phone app there is no live line; the numbers are sent to the network only after you hit the send button.

Just upgraded from 7290 to 8700, and the first annoying thing is this stupid beep when dialing a number.

Have an idea: let's get a phone number from RIM and all of us call repeateadly to report this problem. If we talk to enough people, they will get annoyed too, and maybe they fix it.
I will call them tomorrow, post the number here, and keep calling twice a day during my commute until they fix it...

Damn...

I just got a Pearl yesterday, upgrading from a Nokia, and the first thing I couldn't figure out was how to disable the touch tones when dialing...
although finding the treasure trove that is this forum a nice side benefit, I suppose.

Any updates on this?

Florida Joe... this thread is almost a year old. Why resurrect it from the dead now?
There's also no such thing as 8380. It's an 8830.

Isn't the different tones of the keypad what tells the phone company what to do.
EX: the first threenumbers is the area code of course then the next three tells the phone company which part of town your in and the last 4 are relative to your addy of where it connects . Or isnt this the way its done anymore cause i know for a fact we could use a tape recorder to play back the tones on a pay phone and get free calls .

Threads are never dead as long as they are useful to someone.

Time consuming workarounds if you need to be absolutely silent:

1) add the number you are calling to your contacts and dial the contact
2) Go to Memo Pad, enter the number and then hit the menu key while the cursor is over the number and select Call [number]
3) Go to Memo Pad, enter the number, copy it to the clipboard, then paste it into the dial number area

Now, if we could find a way to get rid of those annoying "computer searching" tones when dialing a speed dial......

Why doesn't RIM get that silent should mean SILENT, as in no sounds whatsoever?

Additionally, the newer OSs (4.5 does, I am not positive about 4.3) do silence the DTMF tones when the BB is placed in silent or vibrate mode.
