Default What does enabling LDAP for GAL lookup do for me?

Please Login to Remove!

What does this reghack in the admin guide found at the URL below do for me?
Why is it off by default, what is this "more comprehensive lookup", and are there any penalties?

<url removed due to stupid board restriction requiring 10 posts.>

Go to google - search for "BES_EXPRESS_Admin_Guide_MS_Exchange.pdf" - click the second link.

Use LDAP to search for users in the global address list
1.At the command prompt, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
2.Right-click Agents. Click New > DWORD Value.
3.Type LDAPALPSearch.
4.Double-click the new value.
5.In the Value data field, type 1.
6.Click OK.
7.On the computer on which the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is installed, in Windows Services, restart the BlackBerry Controller service.

I dunno if there are any penalties, but we use this ALL the time. For instance, if I am on my BB and attempt to send an e-mail the Bartholemew J. Simpson and he is not in my contact list I would hate to have to type that. So I would type, Ba or Bar or bart or whatever and select Lookup. It will query my Exchange servers Global Address List (all e-mail addresses are listed here) and show me all E-mail accounts with those letters.

i LOVE using the lookup feature, primarily because most of my users are too lazy to populate their contact lists. i just explain the gal lookup and walk away.

Evening

I've just compared the difference between lookups if I have the registry "hack" as above added to the server. Using 4.1.2 on Exchange 2003

Without the hack, the lookup only returns AD USERS

If I add the hack, the lookup returns AD USERS and also COMPUTER accounts.
I can't see what users would need to lookup COMPUTERS accounts for, so have taken the registry hack away...

Anyone any idea why/when you would need to use the extended lookup "hack" ?
