Bold does not connect with BB Desktop 4.6 except after reboot

I have the most recent version of BB Desktop 4.6 (eff. Oct. 6) and unless I've very recently rebooted my Vista 64 SP1 laptop when I plug my BB Bold in via USB the clock appears for a couple of seconds the it returns to my home screen. There doesn't seem to be any response from BB Desktop and it does not show any connection nor does it sync.
I've tried rebooting my Bold and restarting BB Desktop but the only soultion seems to be to reboot my computer. Connection and sync work immediately following a reboot but after several hours (certainly by the next day) I have the same connection problems once again requiring a reboot of my computer.
Is there a way I can manual refresh whatever seems be getting cleaned up after a reboot - for example, is there a service I can restart rather than having this occur as part of a reboot?
It's very inconvenient but a workaround that's more efficient than a reboot will satisfy me for now. If someone has an actual solution, better still.
