You know what I would do? Port my number from VZ to ATT and get away from the Nazi dictators.. I absolutely dislike VZ for their crippling/disabling ways.. look at what's currently happening to the "Open Access/Open Application" 700mhz spectrum that they bought? shocker?

Do yourself a favor and port your # out.. VZ sucks. I'd put up with a FEW dropped calls over paying for free stuff any day of the week..

Well here is an odd thing and not so much as an answer, after I installed Google maps, I started the program and it located me with in 1700 feet of where I was. So the location part is active, which is good if your lost, google maps will locate your present location, then show live traffic.

That's cell triangulation and absolutely no where near as accurate as GPS.. with GPS it'll location you from within 1 to 3 meters.. not 1700 meters.. =/

Isn't it nice how you bring up the Nazi statement. So demeaning to the millions who actually suffered and lost loved ones to that government.

Please refrain from calling names here (including that one, unless you have Nuremburg trial proof). If you want to rant, there is a section here just for that.

IMO, the only people that are so pissed about Verizon's methods of controlling certain features are people that didn't research all of their options before getting Verizon service. I know my GPS won't work unless I get their service, but I knew that before I switched from Sprint and I have no place to get angry about it after the fact. Seriously, you wouldn't buy a car in Florida, then drive off the lot and get pissed when you discover there's no air conditioning and the dealer wants another $1500 to install it, would you?

I didn't mean to offend. Only to share a likeness between Verizon who dictates what features you can/can't have, as well as suffered the loss of free features by using their government (service).

I apologize for any offense..

I wasn't necessarily directing this towards any member here, only at Verizon as a corporation.

Still, I stick to my guns about Verizon and if you want to use the internal GPS without paying for it, port your number out to AT&T/Sprint..

I just got my Verizon 8330 today and yeah the GPS seems to be disabled. You can go into advanced options and change it from 911 only to Location, but Blackberry Maps and Google Maps both fail to see it's there at all.

Lame, Verizon.

Now I am betting this is somehow hackable, but that not my field of expertise. ;)

It's only lame if you bought it thinking it was enabled for free. And it's not hackable.

Exactly.

All of you people that have VZW and are complaining about it, then get rid of it. I knew what I was paying for BEFORE I went to the service, as mentioned by kjjb0204 above. It's that simple....

Does that internal GPS help with your dropped calls or uber fast data speeds?

I didn't buy the unit for the GPS, and I'm quite happy with the TomTom in my car, but that doesn't mean it's not lame that Verizon is crippling the device, unless you cough up $10 a month.

And everything is hackable...

Does anyone know if, when you buy the vzw nav package if you are limited to Verizon's map software or if you can then use the GPS with BB Maps and other applications?

Wolf, once you subscribe to the VZW Nav application, other GPS apps will be open for use.

This has been discussed on this forum ad nauseum for the past year. I know you are new, but go check out our GPS section of this forum.

Has anyone else heard rumblings that GPS antennas/chips will be enabled on VzW PDAs soon? I read your link, JSanders, but I think we need an update. I was told by the VzW's customer support line just today (5/13/2008) that GPS on the 8330 should work but is broken and so is VzNavigator.

Can anyone confirm this?

Just to be clear, I'm *not* talking about VzNavigator and I made sure the VzW tech wasn't either. This is what they said...

"the GPS feature that you're referring to (pressing 0 in google maps and seeing something other than "none" as a gps source in BB Maps) is supposed to work on the 8330 (Curve) but is currently broken. There is no estimated time to fix this."

With Sprint you get it all ,less dropped calls, fast data speeds, and FREE GPS.

When blackberry added a GPS to the device I dont think it was for the purpose of someone liike verizon disableing it for their own purpose of making money off it.

I am a taxpayer who payed for the GPS system and once the government allowed it to be public if I buy a device that has a GPS I expect to be able to use it.

Maybe the government should not allow verizon to use our GPS system
