Default Switching to the Curve? Thoughts?

Please Login to Remove!

I tried creating a thread in the 8300 forum. That failed. I hope I get some decent responses here

I have the 8830 from Verizon. As any Verizon customer knows, the service is great, fast data, coverage, and all that. The main thing that sucks is the fact that we get our phones 6months+ after at&t and other companies do. Now the 8300 is coming out for Verizon and I am sure a lot of you know that. To those people who plan on switching to the Curve, I would like to know why? What does the Curve offer (for Verizon mainly) that the 8830 doesnt. I heard GPS and maybe wifi. Other than that all I have heard of is a slight media capability. Does anyone have any real good details that would help me decide between the two. I am a big media person, I like watching videos and what not while I am bored. I finally found a site that converts youtube videos directly for the BB so I can watch youtube when I am bored. I am stuck on waiting for the Curve.. or just holding out for the 9000.. OR even just switching to at&t when their 3g network hits so I can get the phones 6mo+ ahead of time.

Thoughts? Details? Thanks in advanced.

The Curve also offers a camera and, IMO, a better keypad than the 8830. The size is smaller as well. I don't believe there will be Wi-Fi with the device on Verizon.

Ahh forgot to mention the Camera. I like having one, but still rarely use it. Keypad is fine for me on the 8830. Batter life would be a huge factor. I hate the battery life on the 8830. Supposedly they are about the same?

I believe the 8830 has a larger battery (1400mAh) as compared to the 1100mAh battery of the Curve. I don't know if the 8330 will have a larger battery, though. Seidio offers an OEM-sized extended battery with 1500mAh that *might* be compatible with the 8330. If not, I am sure they are working on one that will be compatible.

If you don't absolutely need the camera, I'd definitely stick with the 8830 you have. There's really not much of a difference between the phones except for the camera. AT&T will probably release a 3G BB later this year - you can still switch when that has happened.

Any browsing differences? The last post made me remember the whole battery issue :(

Having both I can tell you they both have their strengths and weaknesses. You just have to decide which works best for you.

The lack of camera and larger size of the 88xx is a downer. But on the plus side Wifi is nice and it looks better, IMO.

I have a ATT BB8800 and have a slight yearn for a new device. The curve is intriguing due to a nicer form factor and camera. But I think I will wait for the 9000.

I have had an 8820 for a while and just bought my wife a Curve. At first, the Curve felt a little cheap to me, but after tinkering with it for a week it's really starting to grow on me. I like that it's smaller than the 8820, has a camera, and has a 3.5mm jack.

Still, I don't think it's enough for me to switch yet. But I am surprised that I like it as much as I do as my initial impression when I tried it in the store was meh.

I have been using the curve for quite some time before upgrading to my 8820. To be quite honest...I like the feel of the 88xx series way more than that of the the curve. To me, it just feels like a better built device, maybe due to it's weight and demensions (the thinnest BB), I just feel that it's a more solidly built machine. Curve felt plastic and cheap.

The camera was a nice feature to have, a very attractive looking device...but it was hardly put to use. I find myself in constant use of wifi and gps.

I actually prefer the 88xx keypad over the curve's, but I may be the only one here who prefers this. lol.

Yes, I think the media capabilities (as far using the device for music and video) of a curve is much better than that of the 88xx series, only because of the speaker placement. My 8820 sounds horrible when i start to raise the volume.

I will keep my 8820 for as long as the 9xxx stays unavailable. Even after as I am very happy with it. GOOD LUCK!!!

On a side note, I do miss the extra convenience key on the curve. sigh.

I'm on verizon and have the 8830. I always had a camera on my other cell phones but rarely used it so I don't miss it. But since the 8830 has no camera you can't get pix messaging on it. That means that any time someone sends you a pix you have to go online to view the message. That's something I didn't know before I got it and I do find that annoying.

I agree with Dinan3 I prefer the keyboard on the 8830 to the curve. I also felt that the device felt more solid, not as cheap or plastic. I went into an AT&T store just so I could compare and be sure.

Good Luck. It's a tough decision. I know I made the right one for me.

I am still on the fence. A huge part of me wants to just jump to ATT for the waaaaaay better battery life and the fact they will most likely have the 9000 before Verizon. :(

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

Camera and internal memory will be the two biggest differences as alluded to above.
I am used to the 8830 already. Knowing when the 9000 would be available could dictate my decision.

Camera please guys, its 2.0mp and if you want good pictures I have a digital camera for that.

The only phone I have seen take pictures worth using are Nokia N82, 5mp with a real flash. The curve's camera phone is a joke. I am sick of seeing camera's mp3 players on phones, I mean we have devices for that work much better than the ones on phones.

I use a apple ipod for my music, works better than any music app on a phone, its fast and works great. The iphone has great music capabilities, but sucks as a phone, poor call quality and the touch keypad is horrid. I really think we need to start focusing back on a phone being a phone, and blackberry does that.
