Default Blackberry will not Activate, RIM support cant figure out issue either

Please Login to Remove!

So i have a user who lost his BB, a senior exec of course. I set him up with a new SIM from T-Mobile and new BB. Go to activate and it hangs at 53%. I knew there was an issue from the start as none of his older email started to pre-populate, which usually happens within the first few minutes. Just to confirm I did use the delete data from mailbox option when removing him from the BES before reactivating, even confirmed the blackberry folder was gone with pfdavadmin.

Tried many things after this, static agent wireless activation, static agent wired, wired and wireless with pim sync disabled. No dice. At one point the activation go up to the dreaded 53% and actually went back down to 28%, that was really odd.

Finally called BB support and told them everything I already did. They looked at the logs and found nothing suspicious. They had me setup a new user and activate the user, and it activated in 5 minutes without any issues.

They finally told me yesterday it must be something corrupt in the mailbox. They suggested I move the mailbox to a new information store and then move it back as that will create a fresh mailbox and cleanup the corruption. Did that last night but still no dice.

I am back on the phone now with them but am just about to throw in the towel and get the user an iphone or android device with activesync. I have never had an issue this bad with a BB.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried another BB? Could be a bad device or a bad PIN?

3 new BB have been tried.

I really never have to call RIM. I can usually get all this stuff figured out on my own. This one is driving me nuts. 12 hours total now trying to get this to work.

what version of BES and mail platform r u on? its possible he has a corrupt PIM folder in outlook which causes ea's to hang on certain 4.1 bes versions and exchange. used to happen to me with memo folders.

you can see which folder might be corrupt in the logs for the user, then disable that folder for wireless sync in the PIM options of the user properties, then after he ea's set it back to sync. i believe the issue is fixed in newer BES 4.1 versions (like SP7) if this is indeed the issue you are experiencing.

Look in the contacts folder and check the files size of it, I had a user that put videos in the contacts notes field. Also check calendar folder too as the same thing can happen.

What database is syncing at 53%? I usually see contacts at about the 80-90% range, and then at 98% that #@#() timezone database that sometimes hangs things...We had a user several years ago that had literally thousands of messages in the inbox and something similar happened. We had to manually turn down the pre-population to a very low number..also, not sure if you tried to do the activation with wireless reconcile turned off, then once activation shows as complete on the device, turn it back on..that way the user at least gets new items...that has been another option for us in similar situations...

Just a clarification to the previous post, when referring to turning wireless reconcile off, I was referring to the setting on BES, not the device.

We have tried all the things mentioned. I am working with the highest level techs at rim and they cant figure it out. We have dont static agents, no pim sync, turned off message prepopulation. I even moved all his contacts and notes out to pst and tried to reactivate, but it didnt work.

Do you think moving everything off to PST, deleting the mailbox, recreating the mailbox and importing the pst back in would help?

I did a mailbox move last night and that didnt work.

Check your Exchange MAILBOX server(s) for event>application log for Error Code 9646..
See that you haven't exceeded your default MAPI connections, preventing activations...

go on, ask me how I know...

I do not see that event id in my app log. Isnt that just a issue with exch2010?

It's actually a 2003 REGEDIT, which MS support recommended I apply to my 2010 MBXs

Guys, i am seriously ready to scream. about 14+ hours on the phone and rim cant figure it out. I just exported the entire mailbox to pst, created a test user, reimported the pst into the new clean mailbox, and tried to activate with the test user. Same result.

I really dont know what to do from here. Apart from scrapping BB and going with an activesync compatible device.

You could try to sync him up against a clean/empty mailbox and then re-import his data after the fact. It'll be annoying, but it might be enough to get it past the initial sync.
