BES 5: upgraded to IE 8 now can't get past login screen

I'm getting increasingly frustrated though I'm not sure if it's my own fault.
Just as I thought it was working I decided to upgrade to IE 8 and now I can't get past the login screen.
I type in my login details and it looks like it's going to log me in but then go "error on page" in bottom left hand corner.
has anyone tried with a different browser?
Does any of the logs refer to this part of the BES?
there aren't any errors relating to it in event viewer.
One of the guys in our team did some testing and came to the conclusion that BAS is not IE8 compatible. Try downgrading to IE7 or use a machine with IE7 to administer the BES

It should work when running IE 8 in Compatibility Mode, which serves as a rollback to IE 7 essentially. Just click the icon to the right of the address bar in IE 8 that looks like a ripped piece of paper.
