Default BES 4.0.4 Upgrade

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all

Currently using BES 4.0.4 and premium Docs to Go. End users can't view Office 2007 documents and understand we need at least BES 4.1.

Our network supplier has offered a FOC upgrade pack to 4.1 - are there any guides/instructions as to what to look out for ?

Am i then okay staying on 4.1 or should I look to move to 5.0 ?

Total of 40 BB users varying from 8700's to 9000's.

Thanks
Andy

Before upgrading to a new version always make sure you've applied the latest service pack, so upgrade to SP7 for version 4.

I would definitely look at moving to 5.0 because once handheld 5 is released you'll be able to access files on local drives and people will love that.
Also you could set up a failover BES if you wanted without having to purchase an additional SRP because 5.0 supports that.

Yes version 5 is chargeable though not sure if Vodafone can get you a special deal?

You can get the SP from here:

Really? Why do you say that? In some cases you need to be at a specific SP level for upgrade (really has to do only with the database schema) ... but why do you say for all cases? You're adding another step to a process that doesn't require it.

That's what I was told by someone at RIM once but if that incorrect apologies.
Do you know at when you need top be at a specific SP level because I never heard of that and would be good to know for future reference.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear this ... but it just isn't needed

The Upgrade documentation released with every release of BES will tell you what version you need to be on.

For example, to upgrade to 5.0, you need to be on BES 4.1 SP3 or 4.0 SP7 (if you only have a single BES) ... for upgrades to 4.1 you need to be on 3.6 SP3 ...

Or you know what, maybe it was me that broke an upgrade once because I wasn't at the right sp level.....was told I had to upgrade to the latest SP and maybe i just made it part of my "best practise" so they can't hold it against me; must be something I have brought with me from working with Microsoft. hmmm....

Vodafone and my dealer instructed me on upgrading recently to 5.0, that i had to have 4.0 to its latest SP, which i did (4.0.7). I did a full backup and then followed the upgrade PDF's to implementing and running the new BES. SInce my server also acts as my Safend server, i had issues with the HTTPS aspect of the web consoles, but HTTP links work ok. You don't need any new codes and all Cals are transfered automatically. Took me little over an hour to do the whole process.

I downloaded the BES from the secure RIM site, where i was also offered a lot of PDF's, so if you need them, let me know, and i can email them over. Only issue i have mow, per my post a few days back, still can't get Office 2007 attachments to open, unless you have OS 4.5 and Docs To Go registered and patched to 1.007 - a manual process per handset.
