Default Service Book - Desktop [ALP]

Please Login to Remove!

A quick question to the BES Gurus -

I want to prevent a Blackberry from performing GAL look ups. I can achieve this by deleting the 'Desktop [ALP]' service book.

My question is, at some point will BES try to resend this service book back to the device?

This doesn't seem like it would be the right solution because if for whatever reason one of the other service books got corrupted and you had to resend the service books they would receive the ALP again and you would have to remember to ask them to delete it which would be an unnecessary admin overhead.

Also as far as I remember being told, when the IT policy is sent down the service books are sent at the same time so if you have set the IT policy resend interval that would mean that service books would be sent down.
maybe someone can confirm whether this is correct?

You would think there would be an IT policy that could be set.
I had a look in the below guide but couldn't find anything but maybe you'll have more luck.

Thanks for the reply.

That's exactly what I told the requester. I could disable the GAL look ups temporarily, but could not guarantee it would stay that way. I scoured the IT policies, but could not find anything to disable that function.

As I told the requester, "RIM has work very hard to make this work well, and now you want me to figure out how to break it?"

Thanks again for your input, I'm going to call this a "Not Possible," and move on to more productive tasks.

simply tell the user to to use the look-up feature when typing emails -- why would they want to stop this feature. I agree, tell them not possible and move on.

It was not a request from the user, but upper management. They want to give a Blackberry to a contractor (short term), but wanted to prevent GAL look ups.

That's an easier fix - if you don't mind him having a different company email address. You could then use the HostedServer reg key to separate out the contacts.

You could also activate him via BIS if that's open.

Doesn't even need a different address; just a different address book.

sounds like an overly complicated solution to a problem that doesn't really exist.

I thought the Hosted Server separates the lists by email address, not address book? Isn't the root of the problem the fact that the BESAdmin does the actual looking up, so the user's assigned GAL based on Exchange's rules don't come into affect?

No, it uses an LDAP field ... of which you can set it to be whatever you want for a filter. Such as CompanyName, or something else.
