Default Password retry policy

Please Login to Remove!

My incorrect password attempt Policy is set to 6 tries. But it only allows me 2 attempts before it erases. I look in the General settings under Advanced Options and sure enough it says 6 there. But after only 2 tries if I get it wrong a third time it wipes the hand held.

Any idea how to remedy this situation?

are you on BES??? may be their IT policy is set to 3

if not are you sure its going to . erase at 3 or it just asks you to type blackberry?? It might be the safety buffer, lets say when the phone is in the pocket and keys get pressed. to avoid an accidental wipe like that its requires you to type blackberry to avoid an accidental wipe

Yes I am pushing out these policies through a BES. The policy was set to 3 but I changed it to 6. I pushed the policy back out and it said it was changed but when I type in a wrong password it says attempt 2/3.

I applied a new IT policy to my user to test it and the new policy over wrote the old one with the new 6 attempt policy.

My question is how come I can't just change the settings in my old policy and have them take effect? I'd really have to create a new policy everytime something changes.

You shouldn't have to create a new policy when you make changes - something isn't working properly. Perhaps just stopping and starting the Policy service will correct the issue.

What version BES are you using (and what platform - Exchange , Domino, etc).

I'm also going to move this to the BES Admin forum so more admins will see this thread.

Thanks a lot. I moved some users from one group to a test group and resent the policy and it they got the updated settings. The weird thing is I changed other settings before and they worked. Like Owner Information populated fine but the Password Policy didn't change.

I'll restart the service and see if that helps.

I'm using Exchange by the way.

Well that didn't work. It still isn't sending out the updates to the policy. Is there a log I can look in to see any errors that may be occuring?

I'm using the newest version of the software. I just downloaded it last week. Its version 4.2.4.15

I am very new to this software and any help would be appreciated. I took some Blackberry Admin courses but we didn't really cover much troubleshooting.

Put the afflicted user in the "Default" policy, make sure it is applied, then move them back to the policy that contains your changes.

Tried that. Still nothing :( This is affecting all users. Not just one. No one recieves the changes I make to the policy.

after you apply the changed policy, are you able to into Options\security\general settings and change the "number of password attempts" to 6 manually?

There are some policies that allow a setting to be a certain max, but the user has to change it to that max number if they want it. So if you set a more restrictive policy, it changes to that specified limit on the handheld, but doesn't change it back if you loosen up the policy. Its my best guess without going into my BES and reading all the policy info (I'm seem to have a case of the Mondays )

Oh that makes perfect sense. I did increase the number of tries from 3 to 6. I'll give that a go.

I am able to change the triest manually but it still only allows for 3 tries. It says it is set to 6 but still only allows 3 tries. Weird...

Did that to. It is still only letting me enter it three times before a wipe. After I'm in I can go in and look at the settings and it does indeed say 6.

Another unrelated question: Can you make calls while an 8830 is locked? The only option I get is Emergency Calls. Once I hit a number key it asks for the password.

I though you could use the phone while it is locked? I have that value set to true in IT Policy.

that is one of those setting you have to set on the phone. The policy allows it, but doesn't enable it. Its in security options, general setting "allow outgoing calls while locked"

So if half of these settings are all manual what good is IT Policy? Grrrrrr...

I don't want to have to educate all of my users on this sort of thing. I would much rather just push out settings to them that they don't have to configure.

Oh well...

RIM thinks its better that they have a choice and I have to agree. It goes way worse for us admins when we push out a policy change to allow something that a few users have requested and then we have 30 users who liked it the old way call up to gripe about having to change it back. Humans are creatures of habbit - good or bad. Its a no win situation for us poor admins.

I would edit something obvious in the it policy to make sure it is being applied correctly, something like allow phone and send it to one test BlackBerry. If you can still make calls using that device then the IT policy isn't being done correctly.
As for password attempts, from memory the default is 10 before wipe, the only one set to 3 is the PIN code are you testing the correct one?
