Default Couple Q's re: Bold WiFi and UMA

Please Login to Remove!

I read a post that indicated that UMA capability is coded into the firmware of the Bold. I am on ATT and have an unlocked Rogers Bold. I cannot call via UMA and was hoping that I might get this functionality when I upgrade to the ATT OS. Am I out of luck??

Second, if I select the hotspot browser in browser options, it automatically reverts to blackberry browser when I save it. When I look at services status it indicates that Blackberry internet service and Blackberry enterprise server are connected to WiFi. Am I browsing over WiFi??

Thanks

i believe at the present time there isn't a O/S release yet which enables this feature. you'll have to wait.

not sure about the others. i dont have the phone yet :(

The answer is no. You won't be able to do this because AT&T doesn't have the necessary setup to do UMA. Its not just the firmware/hardware support you need. It also needs to be supported and setup on the carrier side as well.

Default UMA on Bold

Hello all - it seems to me that, eventually, support for UMA/GAN will be available on the Bold once the OS and Carriers catch up to each other.

Visit the link below to see the hints:
BlackBerry - Wi-Fi Enabled BlackBerry Smartphones - Wireless Networking

Here's a short excerpt:

UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access), sometimes referred to as GAN (Generic Access Network), provides carrier services (GSM®/GPRS/EDGE) over unlicensed networks such as Wi-Fi. It allows smartphones that are Wi-Fi capable to make GSM phone calls over Wi-Fi networks.

The article then lists 4 possible Wi-Fi phones including the 9000, 8120, 8320, and 8820 models. (Perhaps there needs to be a 9020 to make this list complete). Of course the new KickStart/Pearl is also UMA compatible. I believe that model is 8220. The units run the identical operating system to the Bold...

Is there hope? Hopefully I'm correct about this.
Cheers!

The Bold will probably never have UMA. The 3G and UMA hardware don't play well together.

You will not be able to use UMA on an unlocked device from another carrier. A Rogers 8320 unlocked and being used on TMobile will never have UMA.

John - TTune again - I never give up: There is some news that Orange (my old Carrier in the UK ) has 3G/UMA/GAN working happily together. Please see the article below at Unstrung Wirelesss:

PS to my last note: I was at CTIA last week and in the Rim booth a few times. None of the reps there said "never ever" to the Bold UMA. They only said they couldn't talk about it.

I'm still hopeful (glass half full I guess)

Good find TTune. I will always hold out hope for UMA/GAN on at&t, and to stretch the dream a little thin, I would be very happy to see it on the bold.
