I had same problem on Bold 9000. Went from 4.6 to 5.0.822 and suddenly the sound stopped working. Tried all the fixes I could find online and then went back to 4.6 using the backup created by BB Desktop prior to upgrade. Sound works fine, now, though the downgrade ate most of my user settings. Seems both the upgrade and backup/restore processes have some unusual behaviors

I had the same issues after upgrading to .822, so went back to .681, and the ringtones are now back to normal.
There is definitely a glitch in the .822 OS, so best to stay with .681, and wait until there is a permanent fix for .822.

Does .681 let you unlock the keyboard with * send?

I can't get it to work on mine, but then I just use the "Mute" key anyway.

I "downgraded" to .411, purportedly the last 5.0 to permit unlocking with * send. So far ok, less app memory than .822 but close enough that the rate of decay makes them both good for daily reboots. No issues with the ringtones dropping out, but there are no ringtones! Just a bunch of lame, inaudible tunes and whatever you load on your own. Is there an archive of the BB ringtones somewhere for download? I did a search and came up with a lot of scams (websites with "free" in the URL) and broken links. Is there a COD file I can sneak in to make a hybrid? A previous version that has the tones? Did I CENSOREDCENSOREDCENSOREDCENSORED up and delete the COD?

I've had the same issue since I upgraded, but it has only happened twice, a battery pull fixes it. Seems to be a memory issue, as it happens after memory gets lower than normal. However, it also might be facebook related, as both times it seemed to happen after quite a bit of facebook activity (notifications). I just uninstalled facebook to see the results. Stay tuned...

Solved?
I have a BB 8900 on T-Mobile here in the USA. I had upgraded my BB to .822 and after a few minutes of using the ring tones, they stopped working.
I too encountered all of the problems listed in this thread - but I believe I've found the TMO supported solution (and I didn't see it listed in this thread). I called them several times and finally found a CSR who found a solution in their knowledge base.
* While the BB is up and running, do the three character keystrokes to get the BB to reboot (I think it's alt, right shift and delete - you can Google it).
* The screen goes black. When you see the "Blackberry" logo and the progress bar, IMMEDIATELY re-enter the three character keystrokes listed above
The CSR called this the double soft reboot.
It's been two full days now and all appears to be well.

I upgraded to .822 one month ago. Had a single problem with ring tones, as described above, right after the upgrade. Reset with battery pull and have had 0 problems since. Everything is working for me.

I can confirm the bug in 5.0.0.822.
To demonstrate the problem, go to 'Set Ring Tones/Alerts' and edit any ring tone. Quickly scroll through the list and listen to a number of ring tones. At some point in this process, the tones will go silent. The result will be no ring tones or alerts until a reboot.
I believe that there are certain conditions during normal operation that will trigger this bug.
Rather than risk all alerts going dead at unpredictable times, I have downgraded to .681, which seems to be free of this bug.

Yes, that does it. Although I haven't had the problem since I uninstalled Facebook, doing these steps causes it. Doesn't drive the memory down either, so must not be memory related. What a drag. I never tried .681 because of voice jitter issues with earlier 5.0, but I guess it is time to go there. Hopefully voice jitter issues (never happened with .822) won't come back.
