Default New Owner, Many Troubles (Be Gentle)

Please Login to Remove!

Gentlemen,

I am the proud owner of a BB8520. As I am an Old Person, I have had my Saudi students help me set the thing up. All in all, it works, I can make calls and BB Messenger works communicating with my wife in Panama.

But I have a number of odd issues that may or may not be related to one another. Another possibility is they arise from operator error.

1. Keyboard problems. When I smash the Q key I get an A. When I hit A, I get Q. There is at least one other set of reversed keys (I think E and W). I suspect my BB may have a non-QWERTY keyboard mapping. When I got the thing, it came with French instructions only. That might be a clue. Can I remap the keyboard?

2. Software Update problems. I plug the BB into my Mac, after I have installed BB Desktop Manager and the BB begins to update. About 20 items* to upload with my creaky Saudi internet connect, this takes a long time. When I get to the last file, I get an error message that, "BlackBerry Desktop Manager could not connect to the device," So I disconnect the device (re-enter my service provider's PIN) and reconnect the device. BDM does not see the device. I restart BDM and it tells me that updates are available. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Can't get to the Net. I suspect this a problem with my Service Provider (Saudi Telecom). When I "Open Browser," I get a Saudi Telecom screen asking me for a user name and password. I figure I need to harass STC, right?

By the way Does turning on BlueTooth do any good? I do not have a BlueTooth headset so have BT switched off. Am I doing the right thing?

OK, can anyone help with any of this stuff? Many thanks

*TurboTax 2008? Why is that in the little window of files being updated? Library loans, what is that?

1) You already have a thread going on this, please keep that issue in that thread. It is bad etiquette to double post.

2) I am not sure, there is a Mac Users forum here. Try posting your question there.

3) You will need a BlackBerry data plan to use the internet on your device.

4) If you're not going to use Bluetooth, then leave it off. It will help battery life by leaving it off as well.

5. I think it is rude to keep asking us to "be gentle". We are.
When you start to open duplicate threads, you are being rude, and the gentleness aspect wears off, quickly.

Your previous thread is here -- and it is gentle.

Answer the question about do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan from your carrier.

Yikes. I am an idiot and I beg your apology.

I thought I had gotten to this forum by trying to find an official BB solution to my issues. Apparently, this is the same forum I found earlier on my own.

Please accept my apology.

Mods, please feel free to close this thread. You may delete it an erase so that no trace or remembrance of it remains.
