Implementing Smart Card Readers

I have been tasked with finding out how we can implement SCRs with our BES system but I'm not finding much info on it. Is there special software that needs loaded on the BES or the handhelds? Or is it just a matter of having the proper settings in the IT POLICY to get it to work.
