Default Bold 3G Speed

Please Login to Remove!

I've been trying to see how fast the 3G network is on my Bold. Side by side with a friends 8820, I don't notice much of a difference getting to web pages. I searched BBF but didn't find anything.

Reading on the net, it seems the browser based speed tests aren't accurate because the BB uses a proxy and strips away some data. Got that from a couple different sites.

So I downloaded a program from XtremeLabs.com made for the BB but the speeds I'm seeing are 250-300k much less than expected. The only other thing I came up with is to tether the Bold and use the PC to do a speed test.

Just wanted to know what others are doing to track speed.

Regards-Michael G.

The BB browser doesn't use a proxy as far as I know, however Opera Mini does and that does skew the speed tests. But, IMHO, none of the tests are really optimized and made for cellular devices so any speed reading is suspect.

In your example, most web pages are not optimized for cell based mobile devices so their loading takes time.

That being said, you should see speeds in the range of 400-900 kbps for 3G and 50-125 kbps for EDGE. 250-300 kbps isn't that bad. I think you should see some decent speeds while tethering however, since the PC should have more horsepower than the BB.

And keep in mind that your speed depends on many factors, most of which are outside your control: device processor, device memory, distance tot he tower, tower congestion and the connection itself are some of them.

Wirelessly posted (Bold 9000)

IMO 3G means 3rd genration and it focus on media streaming. Try load a youtube video with a non 3G phone and you'll see the difference.

So what is the point? We all know 3G is faster than EDGE (none 3G).

3G technology enables us to have video conference on a mobile phone.

If you put the 8800's and the 9000's browser next to eachother and didnt see much diff. im not surprised. The limiting factor is the browser more than the connection.. the bolds browser sucks hard. Takes way too long running scripts etc than it needs too..
