Cingular charges $60/month (I think) to tether.

my question is can i still tethered using the $29.99 w/o them knowing and not being charged for extra?

I've thethered for a year and a half with Cingular and have never been charged. Changed to the 29.99 plan as soon as it was available and still have not had any additional charges.

There is a huge thread floating around here somewhere about this. It includes a how to in it. Do a search for it here you will find some info on how to do it "without cingular find out."

Should do.

What's the $60 (or in my case Verizon's $15) a month fee actually buy? Do they enable something in the phone? Is it for using them as an ISP? (and if the latter, how does Sharkmodem work? Who does it dial?)

There is nothing for FREE out there. Shark modem is your best bet, it's about 30 or 40 bucks, ONE TIME FEE and that's it...

If you don't think that's worth it, well good luck to ya..

I'm using Bell Mobility in Canada with an unlimited data plan and got hit with $200 in long distance roaming charges when I used my Blackberry and laptop up North for about four or five hours of usage. Quite a surprise.

Last I checked, T-Mobile allowed tethering with all of their $19.99+ unlimited data plans.
